    THAT SUB BOX IS HORRIBLE!!!!!

It does not do the L7 any justice!! A 12" JL with half the power in a JL box is louder and deeper then that L7 in that box.

If you are happy with it, thats fine, but if you want to get what you paid for then look in to a better box.

Perhaps you should read the specs on the Kicker solo's before you judge. Dude JL subs don't get loud.. period ( with the exception of the W6 and W7 with 1+kw ).

I have read the specs..... and they dont mean anything unless you know what to look for and the science behind it, as well as talking to some people with experience and having some practical to back it up. If i havnt seen it or i dont fully understand it im guna keep my mouth shut.

90% of your bass comes from what enclosure you have. Better box = better bass. I have hooked up a JL sub (~400rms rating) in there standard box then played the same song on the same amp (kicker 750.1) on the L7 in there standard box and the JL bass was better due to a slot port. Im not blindly judging. The L7 box is just not good and could be alot better to accomodate the 750+rms. I have talked to some pro's who have masive amounts of experience in the field, as i was interested in a L7, they all agreed not to bother with the standard box because its prity rubbish. Not big enough, not tuned well and not ported well.

Maby you need to brush up on your facts before saying JL subs dont get loud. RMS doesnt always mean more bass. JL W7 vs kicker L7 is a common comparison, like holden and ford.

Fire up dude, perhaps you should have read the bit in the bracket so ill insert it again Dude JL subs don't get loud.. period ( with the exception of the W6 and W7 with 1+kw ).

People with lots of experience in the field, sounds like JB to me, there is much more to better SQ and SPL than Kicker and JL. Of course the L7 could sound better in a bigger box but what is the end goal? If that is all the space he has then thats what he need to take advantage of it. Stick that in a 6th order bandbass and of course it will get louder but at the sacrifice of any normal music abilities. Stock boxes serve a purpose, I am not saying they are great but they may serve his needs well. IMO stick it in a sealed box.

You say off the same amp the JL played the song better but what are you talking about? Was it louder, did it sound better, did it exhibit a different Q?. Also because of the port tune, one may be better suited to the song. Most of the time as I said the stock boxes are very safe in response and power handling. If the JL has the port suited very closely to the Hz of the hit, of course it will seem louder. The are also woofer efficiency plus the efficiency of the enclosure plus the cabin gain of the car plus the phase of the woofer due to positioning etc etc all play a part.

I like how you say RMS doesn't mean everything... thank you captian obvious. As you said commonly campared like holden and ford.. well as like them, there are a lot better value for money and higher quality products out there.

Guys guys, it's ok! I assumed the box wouldn't be the best I could get! I had this same concept in mind when purchasing the KS series kickers and not something like the RS or SS...

Nothing you buy with the product ever will be the best! I couldn't be assed to get a tiny bit more bass into my car...that L7 thumps the **** out of any other sub I've heard in a car. That pleases me. It hurts my ears to turn it up enough, and I can SEE (yes, SEE) that it's still got more in the kick in it if I want to turn it up more. I've gotta be happy with that, what's more power when I've ALREADY got more than enough!?! Lol...

Yeah thats what I mean, if your happy with it then why change. Its all good for someone to say it's crap but there are other restrictions that they might not know about.

Leave it as it is and enjoy your music at normal levels without being a tool that wakes everyone up at 1am in the morning.

The bloody stereo will do that as it is hahaha

Hey what do people think of mounting my rear tweeters on either the A or B pillars and directing them properly? I'm thinking this because I hate the position of the woofers, and am NOT putting up with tweeters being directed into friends' legs. Plus it will add huge depth to the sound which is always good.

in a MK3 i found to mount A tweeter on the A pillar or even in the factory tweeter mount.

It really kills the sound, it also really splits the sound.

I'll post a pick of my front in my golf a little bit later, maybe that can give you an idea to start from.

                    Finally!!

Hey guys, bit of an update:

After finding a noise problem in the audio - what we eventually found to be a grounding loop - I had to stop the rest of my install for a while as we tested everything to make sure the problem was grounding. I bought (from Jaycar) a stereo line ground-loop isolator today and now I can continue with my install!

                    What's left:
                    Hide Wiring
                    Get wiring through door grommets
                    Mount crossovers into doors
                    Mount tweeters

As for tweeter mounting, I've decided my front tweeters will be put in the original dash location, while the rear tweets are going to go in the dummy tweeter position next to the door handles. I'm finally deleting the 6x9's I have in the parcel shelf, thank goodness...

                    Next mission:
                    BOOT LAYOUT
My cousin wants to help me go all out with fiberglass, but I think he may have said that without thinking how much work he'll have to do with me hahaha. I'll keep everyone updated as I decide how my boot should look!

                    Cheers

Hey mickey .. great to hear things are working out...
When you are doing fibre glass , don't be foolish enough to buy it where else get some from me.. I will give you a good bargin !! I have still have about 60 x 1 meter of it ..

I would mount it on the B pillar it is WAY too close to your ears, I have it on the rear door lock.. Now I kinda regret.

For the front, dispite what Glidn said I will go for A pillar eventually. I had it on the rear mirror angle area, previously faceing crossed to head rest but I now have it facing directory opposite. it is sounding great. Note I have 4" speaker in the OEM tweeter position too, the tweeter and 4" works very well combinded, lifting the stage higher.

For the rear, I have disconnected the tweeters, it is way too bright ..it is wrecking the image.. So I think mounting it at 2 oclock positon from speaker would look and sound nice I am yet to test it out.

Yeah tweeters are funny things. It's not often I like tweeters when they are only mounted in the A pillar. Each to there own...

As Mr Charisma stated about A pillar and like i have said to soundofav6. I have played with many location but the kick panel in the mk3 Golf/Jetta/Vento what ever, i have found that just above the mid door mounted woofer on the angled plane, that was the nicest and also alomst pointing towards the otherside passengers Naval.
I.E. passenger tweeter mount pointing towards drivers naval and vice versa.

I played With Alpine Type R silk dome tweeters, Infinity T10c and Focal TN47 i think and i found all three sets of tweeter to be best position.

I never attempted the Kick panel like Mr Charisma, mainly cause i did not have the car long enough to do so, but secondly i wanted to 3 way active in front. so was still deciding on the components to use.

From a SQ point of view, all the the guys that won SQ in IASCA in the states for the past 3 years have been mounting there tweeters in there kick panels.

Only difference between some of the kick panel install's where tht some where off-axis like Mr Charisma's and some where on axis.

The other problem that I have ( and why they seem to always end up in the kicks ) is because I run harsh tweeters. I love the harshness of the Boston tweeters however you could never really mount them high in the A pillar, even if they where -4db. Since I listen to Rock / Punk / Dance / Trance / R&B etc those tweeters help me acheive the sound I want.

You will need to give the tweeters plenty of power if you mount them in the kicks to get the best results. The good thing about my Boston splits is you can set it to let them know they are off axis

But yeah like glidn said, there are better places to mount your tweeters than to go as high as possible straight away. I did hear a DLS set mounted similar to glidns and it did sound great, still achieved decent height but separation and depth was far superiour to if they where mounted a-pillar.

Soundofav6, perhaps when you get a chance you should book in and go see they guys at FHRX.

Sorry I missed your post. I have heard and read good things about them from other forums.

So when I mount them tweeters in the kicks how do I give them heaps of power? You mean reduce the power of "higher mounted" tweeter as in gain and -4db and have a more intense gain in the kick with 0 db ?

Anyways, we had pretty full on day. Not much photos yet but good progess. Should be 1 more day head of us.
