Tuner or aerial?

Mk1 Golf GTI
I replaced some LED's in the dashboard lighting. Involved removing the radio head unit to get access.
Now that I have put it all back the radio is only producing crackling/hiss - other inputs produce good sound.
Wondering how to tell if it is a problem within the head unit or the aerial?

Put a multimeter on the aerial - good earthing, good connections between aerial and plug into radio, but some leakage between aerial and body/earth.
I thought this might have produced poor reception rather than no reception. Anyone able to offer some information?

Did you check the ground between head unit and body?

Radio often relies on it, other inputs don't.

Thank you for the suggestion. I checked that ground between head unit and body and it is fine.

So I am wondering if the short between the aerial mast and the body is responsible for the lack of reception?

You may have crushed the antenna cable causing the short?

It could be, though if it was working before you pulled the head unit out and you didn't disturb it...

It does sound like lack of signal, tho'.

Does your head unit need a code? Some older units require the security code re-entered if they're disconnected — although in that case I'd expect it to not work at all.

It does sound like the cable has got crushed where it passes through the inner guard. I guess I was looking for confirmation that that would lead to complete loss of signal.
I'll get a new aerial tomorrow - one with a longer lead so that it can reach the radio without being pulled tight - and see if that restores the radio function.
