  • Tiguan bluetooth options

    Hey all,

I recently bought a 2009 (my10) it has a RNS510 stereo however doesn't have the bluetooth module integrated. I live in western victoria and my options for dealer/ after-market installers is limited. I asked the nearest VW dealership who quoted ~$800 installed which is too much for my liking.

I did some research and found some aftermarket options are available. My requirements are

    1. integration with radio/dash/phone buttons on steering wheel.
    2. easy installation I have removed the radio and am fairly comfortable with plugging in an additional box. however not sure about coding or how to go about that so would prefer something without coding(if possible).
    3. nice to have but not required USB input

I was looking at a Denison BT PRo link here. just wondering if anyone has had any experience installing this unit or using the unit and if it is good quality. The website says it's plug and play so does that mean that coding is not required?

also does the Tiguan have a microphone preinstalled is there any way to tell?

sorry for asking so many questions just confused as to the best course of action to take

    A couple of suggestions....

Check out this section of the forum as a lot of your questions are answered there: VW Car Audio and Electronics

I don't have any experience with the particular BT unit you are looking at, however there are fundamentally 2 different protocols these units talk depending on whether you're running an older red MFD or newer white MFD. If you want to get your phone book and BT info in the MFD the unit has to talk the correct protocol - BAP (new/white MFD) or DDP (old/red MFD). I can't remember but this may also be the case for the steering wheel buttons too. Some people have just got the BT unit talking to the RNS and run everything through there (accept/reject calls etc) and not worry about the steering wheel/MFD. If you do have a red MFD it is harder to find BT units that are compatible with these older cars - most units these days are BAP.

Here's a couple of sellers that I have used in the past: Vag-NavisystemsSL and carsystems.eu

You will need to install a microphone - usually this is run around and up the pillar into the overhead light panel. It would be very unlikely that this would have been installed without a BT unit.

Finally work out what features you want/need and make sure the BT unit you purchase will support everything that you want. It was important for me to get phone book function working which requires PBAP (Phone Book Access Protocol) to be supported. Other function is A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Protocol) which allows streaming of music/content over BT. I use this feature also.

Newer BT units will generally have better compatibility with new phones. I have heard of people having issues with older BT units talking to new gen phones.

Likely you'll have to enable the hardware using VCDS/Vagcom. $800 from the dealer seems a little steep.

I installed RNS510 and 8W7 bluetooth module. Both sourced overseas (EU), both oem VW parts. Bought the cradle for underseat mounting from local dealer.
Instructions are on the web,. Bluetooth and RNS installation took about 2 hrs including cleanup and patting self on the back.
Since you need to access the back of the RNS I suspect you would be up for similar amount of time. I did have to get the units enabled via VCDS.

No issues with quality of the calls, IPHONE streams music ok, buttons on steering wheel fully functional, and my white MFD displays call information or Navigation directions depending on which screen its on. My other half is totally happy, credit earned.

Here's a couple of options for red MFD:

VW Bluetooth KIT RNS 510 RCD 510 9W7 â–º RED MFD Compatible 9W7 VW BT FIS Link | eBay

FIS - LINK - Can Box Converter for Red Dot Matrix FIS and New BT Modules

These units should work with your car, but suggest contacting the seller to make 100% sure before purchase.
