  • RNS not tracking

Like the title says guys, the RNS is seeing the satellites but not tracking them.

This was happening on FW2760, so I thought maybe an upgrade was in order. Found with FW4020, and 3810 my unit was suffering with Regensburg Syndrome. Downgraded to 2760 and still suffering from it. Figured what the hell and downgraded further to 1120 and the unit spat it totally (thought I had bricked it). Settled on FW1300 for the moment and while the unit started beautifully and tracked satellites after about five minutes of powering up, it is now playing the same games.

    Any ideas anybody?

was the RNS510 factory fit or installed at delivery or after that? If it was installed at delivery or after I would locate the aerial for the NAV, It should be somewhere behind the dash panel if its not a factory unit. I have seen in the past if the aerial is fitted too low from the top of the dash it can see the satellites but too slow as its being blocked by dash materials etc. so when you check the satellites they are there one minute then start to fade away and thats when the nav starts to stop showing for a while. ... How long has it been on? I've seen the RNS go nuts before and considering you've done a lot firmware shuffles it probably a little muddled up. I've seen brand new units, which excellent signal take half a day to gain their composure. Just drive to a shopping centre or something and it should get its head sorted.

Ive had trouble with my RNs as well I was driving through peoples back yards the other day, My TomTom also wouldn't find a fix on the GPS satellites till I held down the on /off switch.

Thanks for the replies guys. Was a self install quite a while back and worked fine up until a few months ago which is what prompted the FW update(s). I was sort of resigned to the fact that maybe the antenna had dropped down into the dash and was having troubles locking on. Ahhh well, guess who's pulling his own dash apart tomorrow ....makes a nice change, I'm usually doing it to someone else's car!

Well, it's been apart and back together.

The antenna now sits above the light sensor behind the mirror with some 3M tape. Cables run along the loom above the A pillar airbag and across behind the glovebox. Started it up and straight away 6/10 satellites. Went for a drive and have had between 5/10 and 9/12 satellites the whole time.

Thanks again for the confirmation guys, seems the antenna had slipped just far enough to disturb the tracking. Won't slip now without me knowing though

Glad you sorted it mate.... seen this before, you should still be able to hide it away under the dash, remove the dash panel insert (clocks) and put it behind there and it will work fine......VDUB...

That is where it was originally, under the centre vent section. Looks like it may have slipped far enough under to disturb the reception....won't be a problem now though, it's above the light sensor.
