  • RNS510 nav - time of arrival estimates very poor

I did a search and found this mentioned a few times but in other forums.

The RNS510 time of arrival estimates are woefully bad.
My map data is version 7679, a MY13 passat

In setup you can change the travel speed. Setting it to the fastest setting makes the time of arrival estimate over-estimate a 5 hour journey by over 1 hour in the country. Setting it to lower settings make this estimate even more pessimistic. On the fastest setting the estimate in urban areas is far too optimistic to be useful.

A lot of major highways show in nav posted speed limits of 120kmh, so I don't think the estimate can be using the highway speed limit, nor can it be using the cars recent average speed over any distance.

For instance, 200km to go, and a steady 95kmh average speed for the last hour, RNS510 might say over 3 hours remaining travel time, implying the RNS510 used an average speed estimate of more like 75kmh .. over a highway with a map displayed speed limit of 120kmh

I'm taking a wild guess here, nothing can be done?

Better than my Garmin which says I'm 15 minutes from home when I'm 15km away & gridlocked.

Firstly up grade your V5 map to V6 then it will show 110kph not 120

Not really worth worrying about I think the thing works it out over a period by using GPS plotting so if you are on a slow part of the road for a while it will alter, then if you speed up for a while it will change again.

I never worry about how long to get there, Just drive till I do.
Evne my Tomtom in the POLO is not infallible but certainly better than VW woeful offering
V6 maps are not perfect with speed zones either but the mapping is much more up to date in our area.

Go to the Nav section and D/load the new map

You can adjust the average speed calculation in the settings menu, I think its either in map or navigation
