Rear DVD headrests

Have searched forums but no topics of recent covering this, so here I am seeing if anyone has recently purchased rear DVD headrests.

Looking to get them fitted to my Passat when it finally gets delivered next week. Looking for feedback on quality, matches to interior trim, opinions on those who have had them or currently using them etc.

Not interested in Ipad solutions etc as my son is only 1 year old, more looking for a way to entertain him on some longer trips we are taking (wiggle crazy already). Have considered portable options but the look so messy and that will annoy the life out of the wife and me.

Any brand and installation place in syd/south coast would be great.

I have played around with a few options in a previous car (Nissan import) but does not really make a difference the car brand for this topic. I have started working on these options on my VW Transporter but my kids are older now so Ipad's work well.
I first tried a portable twin DVD player from **** Smith which was terrible. I returned this for a single portable DVD played with a bag that mounted between the front seats and this unti was very good and has provided use for over 8 years with no problems.
I then bought some DVD headrests with 7" monitor from Ebay (china) which worked well for the first couple of years. The fit was good provided you make sure you choose a unit with compatible pole size and width between the poles. These were a tan vinyl which were a fairly good match for my leather seats. My units were hinged on the top edge to put in DVD. These units also had games on a CD. The games were basically unused as they are very simple and not worth worrying about.
The DVD's played well on most roads with very few problems. After a couple years of use I found that the DVD's seemed to be more fragile and skipping and other irregularities became more frequent with some discs just not playing.
If I was to do it again, I would put in headrest monitors that played off another source. I have had a lot of success playing movies from Ipods or Iphones. I find these very good as there is no skipping and the screen size is small enough to display very well.
I installed the headrests myself as I found it quite easy.

I've still got these DVD headrests from my Jetta..... I had them colour matched to the VW leather.....matched the colour perfectly..... http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...led-35070.html ....... all yours if you want them.

Thanks for the feedback guys much appreciated. My wife has been researching and decided to go the ipad route as she often likes to remove the headrest on long trips. Being that the headrest will be wired into the seat she has made the decision that this will not be a suitable option.

So the old saying "happy wife, happy life" applies in this situation. Fortunately I have found some decent looking ipad seat holders and we are just going to have to learn to live with charger cables dangling around on long trips.

Oh well on the bright side i can buy a new ipad and my son can grow up chewing on the old one

I hate to be a stick in the mud but removal of the head restraint will drastically increase the chance of major neck trauma in case of an accident and is strongly not recommended. In this case "happy wife" could end up "paralysed wife".

Yes I would also think it would be a illegal as headrests are a Safety feature , and you could get a fine for driving with them removed ?

Agreed though, removal of headrests for average sized folk is craziness.

Yes if an airbag should go off her head would go out the back window not the front one Like people who put feet on dash and bag goes off, ankles end up just below knees and attached to ears Have seen pics of that and its not nice

Hopefully her shinbones went folded backwards so that her ankles were touching her kneecaps though
