  • Volk-L to 9W7 problems

    Hey guys,

Recently went to upgrade my Volk-L with a 9W7 module and have a minor dilemma.

For the most part, all the expected bluetooth functions do work, but I'm struggling with getting some of the voice controls going.

After pulling out my RNS unit, I assumed there would be a microphone plug (which linked to the existing microphone) and an additional bluetooth harness which connected to the original harness.

However, after checking it appears that the VW techie wired the Volk-L kit into the original harness pins (which I guess is fair enough), and it appears he simply soldered the microphone cable onto the bluetooth wiring (which means I can't simply unplug it to chuck on the new harness).

Now, for some reason, there's an inline fuse wired into the bluetooth wiring which has thoroughly confused me as I haven't seen any mention in other installs of there being a fuse wired within the harness.

For the moment, I haven't changed any wiring and am currently using the same connector for the 9W7.

I'm going about this because my bluetooth voice control works, but my RNS510 voice control doesn't as it appears the microphone was only connected to the bluetooth unit (as the car originally had a RCD510 with no voice control)

    Now my questions are,

    1. What would be the purpose of this fuse? (I'm not talking about the fuse on the RNS. This fuse is wired between the bluetooth connector and the original harness)

    2. Assuming the fuse serves no real purpose (rather just an additional precaution), am I safe to remove all the wires from the existing bluetooth connector to the original harness, and simply use the following harness.

    Any insight would be appreciated.

    Cheers

    I recently went from a Volk L to a 9w7, i had a rcd510.
it was a simple plug and play for me, new bluetooth unit into existing harness, jumped into vcds and activated voice control - according to memory was under the steering wheel module.
my harness didn't have the fuse, the mic was wired into the bluetooth connector

Sounds like you went through the same things. But no fuse huh? Hmm.

Yeah, I activated my 'bluetooth' voice control so my MFSW turns on that system and that works fine so no issue.

But when I hit the 'star' button on my RNS510 to use the additional voice controls, no matter how loud I yell at the car all I get is the 'Pardon?'. Very frustrating, hah.

Oh well, at least it's not throwing any codes I guess.
