Playing music via IPhone cable not bluetooth

In my Alltrack glovebox I have the USB connection that i've plugged the Apple cord into. When I connect my Iphone 4s into it I get the message saying that this device is not supported and the car only lets me play my music via bluetooth. Is this the only way I can play my music? Will the VW cable for Apple products work?

I only ask this because I can only have one phone connected to the car at a time, so I had my phone connected but couldn't play music off my wifes iphone unless I unpaired my phone and connected hers.

In my TDI glovebox I have a MIDI connector NOT a USB

You might need the better type cable which allows you to use the MIDI functions The one that usually comes with the car is not the right one VW charge about $80 for it EBAY about $8

Yes you need a MDI Ipod cable. You can get it locally here.

The cable that came with the car looks similar this but has a usb end instead of apple. I thought I could just plug the apple cord into it and have all the functions work.

One day there might be an accepted standard amongst manufacturers for a bus system that works the same where ever it is used. It will be a universal size and easy to connect. I think it could be quite popular. People will instantly identify it as a single connection with all sorts of purposes. You could even call it a Universal Serial Bus, if you wanted.

Has taken 20 years and cellular phone manufacturers are only starting to agree on a standard charger socket so what hope have we got getting and audio output the same across platforms
We already have a Universal Serial Bus and that doesnt do it as thats what this thread is about.

We already have a Universal Serial Bus and that doesnt do it as thats what this thread is about.

That's kind of the point. USB has been around for nearly 20 years, so there is no excuse not to use it. VW choose not to and it is a source of constant annoyance, other manufacturers do employ the use of USB and it works perfectly.

Wouldnt be able to give you all the controls though as not enough pins to transmit the info as per Midi

USB has only 4 pins and none for audio so you would have to engineer a whole new plug which would probably be called something else.

I've only seen the latest gen cars/headunits work with just the USB cable for iPhone/iPod. Alpine units and whatnot have been using the dock connector for ages. Don't forget MDI was designed 4-5 years ago. It'll be a different story with the cars based on Golf Mk7 Tech
