  • Full panel display for MKV question

    Hi guru's.

I have a 2008 GT Sport 1.4 twin charge with the standard radio mounted in the dash, as I couldn't justify the $2250 price for the full screen SATNAV option when I had a perfectly good NAVMAN at home.

It's been a couple of years now, and I would really like to fit a full screen LCD panel (VW preferably, as I had some issues with an aftermarket system just after I got the car. It wouldn't allow me to retain all of my dash/steering wheel functionality. That was through JB, and from memory it was Alpine of Kenwood) into that slot on the dash.

Honestly I'd be happy enough if it was just the radio/CD player with no SATNAV or reverse camera functionality, as I don't have that anyway, but am not sure what model I would need OR if it's a simple case of removing one and slotting in the other.

Any thoughts or advice would be very much appreciated.

    Dave

The RCD510 would be the cheapest option but the extra money for RNS510 is well worth. The RVC images look much better on hi res. screen which rcd510 dosn't have.

Also, you might need to upgrade your canbus gateway, to avoid battery drain. Check if your revision is rev. K or earlier, in which case you need an upgrade. There's lots of info if you search the forum.

+1 for the RCD510 - there is a thread here about which ones to buy so you can use the SD Card - I gave up on my SD card, but it works fine in my old mans skoda.

Not sure about that, I have an August 08 model and it came with RCD300. I'm assuming that means I have the older gateway though.

My friend has a MY08 GT Sport and his CAN Gateway was fine, he has a RCD510 and a MK6 Climatronic in there right now. Almost looks like a MK6 in there

The screen/features of the RNS510 is much better, but the price/speed of the RCD510 can be hard to beat

Thanks very much all. I'll check the CAN-Bus thread too thanks Transporter.

Apologies if this is a noob like question, but can you get SATNAV on the RCD510? If not I'll be happy as is in audio mode, mbe BT. I don't have parking camera's or climate control stuff running through it as it's separate in the 08. I just want a bigger screen, prefer genuine Golf parts that work simply, install simply and allow me to retain ALL steering wheel control functionality.

I assume any audio supplier/fitter can fit it and the new CAN-Bus if it's needed pretty simply?

There are tons on Gumtree for sale...is this the best option for purchasing one of these units?

Just curious, short of actually doing an auto-scan, to get the current software revision on my gateway, is there any way to determine wether battery drain is occurring (except waiting for the battery to drain)? I'm in the process of upgrading to an RCD-310, and while I'm waiting for a micro-can cable, I've tried it out briefly. The unit turns on and off with the key in the ignition. Can it be that it's still not going to sleep properly when turning off the ignition?

No. The RCD-510 and RNS-510 look very very similar, but the RNS is essentially an RCD with navigation.

(There's also a DVD drive instead of 6CD, video playback capability, an internal hard disk, and a high resolution screen, but if these features aren't an issue for you, go with the (much cheaper) RCD.)

Transporter can come to you, and supply and install RCD-510 and RNS-510 units... check it out:

Yeah go with Transporter for OEM in Adelaide. All OEM units need to be coded to your car which requires VW dealer equipment or the VCDS. An installer will not have this or any knowledge of coding unless they are a VW specialist.

Also if you do buy from anywhere else online make sure it comes with the radio code which is required to code the unit to your car, otherwise the unit is just a paper weight.
