Personally I would buy almost anything but the factory unit for navigation.

Would be the most overpriced underspecced unit I have ever seen.

Has extremely poor text to speech instructions.

Maps are more out of date than a lot of others.

All Tom Toms, Navmans and Garmins are far more up to date and have better voice instructions than the VW model.

If I had realised it was what it is would have had it removed before I bought the car.

Just my personal and very disappointed opinion.

Perhaps the ANS models for sale on here have better mapping.

But as others have stated... Media centre more so.
I know when I buy a second hand car I always look for factory fitted but hey that's just me.

The ANS units run iGo Primo which is one of the best out there, satisfies the most avid TomTom fans.

Almost all aftermarket head units are media centres, unless you're comparing a handheld GPS, which is 1/10 of the price.

Several aftermarket options including mine also has full steering wheel controls and mine has other factory perks such as OPS display.

It's your choice if you want the factory unit from the dealer but to me $2,500 for the RNS is the biggest joke I have ever heard. Know how many Galaxy S3 or iPhone 5s you can buy with that? the unit is worth half the dealer price, at the most. If you're set on an RNS-510, the locals around these forums or eBay are the places to go to if you don't feel like being blatantly ripped off

I will most likely be going factory. No point with the hassle, and if I'm spending that much on the car i may swell just spend the extra 1K.

Lol, after reading this I thought yeah, fair point...but.... mine has just failed.

Without having to remove myself and posting it to australian dist, it'll go to the dealer and they will fix it. simple as that. if its s/w issue it'll get fixed, if its something worse, then warranty will cover.. three years after purchase.

You wouldn't pay double the price for an extended warranty for anything else would you? You would have enough to insure yourself of a replacement if that were the case.

Lol well at least it worked out for you. There are local installers who stock the RNS-510 locally though for a (reasonable) premium over eBay units. JKU is one example, they are a sponsor here. So there won't be any posting required from you. It's the aftermarket ANS series I offer that will need self-installation, with price about half of a local RNS-510. Although this may change in the future and I plan to get local installers on board.

Also don't forget if you get a clueless dealer (which happens quite often) they most likely can't solve your SW issues. Plus I've heard stories of the dealer taking apart the dash very unprofessionally and damaging trim. Sure you can push them to replace it etc but if it's hassle-free you're after, it's not guaranteed with the dealer at all, you'll still be leaving it up to luck. Maybe you'll decide it's worth it after all, but my point is that the only thing the dealer has going for them is 3 years warranty on the unit, and to me (and I would think most others) there is no way in hell that is worth over $1,000.
