  • RCD510 + bluetooth phonebook functions

I've just removed the original RCD310 and replaced with RCD510 in a 2011 Tiguan (white MFD). I didn't change the Bluetooth kit - stayed as original (1K8 051 730 D).

Everything works as it previously did (phone/volume buttons on steering wheel), however I was hoping that the phonebook functionality would work but I'm guessing I may have to upgrade to 9w7 bluetooth to get this going.

I tried disconnecting the bluetooth connection, deleting all connections out of the car and then repairing but this didn't suck out the phone book.

The only thing that happens now is if I press the "phone" button on the RCD510 then it mutes the radio.

Before I go buying a 9w7 (which I think I may have to) does anyone know if there are VCDS functions that have to be enabled to get the phonebook working?

    Thanks.

What are you planning to do with your RCD310?
Sorry I can't help with your question.

I've got an RCD510 with 9W7, red MFD. Phone book works but steering wheels button just mutes.

There are definitely options in VCDS, but nothing that you should need to use. If you go into the settings menu on the RCD510 do you have a "telephone" option? Enables bluetooth in Media-in and phone book functions IIRC

RCD310 is already on Parts for Sale - listed here http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/foru...ode-75991.html

If I can't get the dealer fitted bluetooth unit working this will end up in the parts for sale section as well (once I get a 9w7).

The reason I think it is a dealer fitted unit is that they've just dumped the bluetooth unit on top of the a/c controls - not where a factory installed unit would be I'd think.

Nope - no telephone option under the settings menu. My question is whether this option needs to be enabled in VCDS or if this is a function of the bluetooth module and the RCD510 recognises it and adds this as a menu.

I'm guessing it needs to be supported in hardware (9w7) and enabled in software (VCDS). But I'm only guessing.

I just want to be sure that my bluetooth (Novero HT-3 / 1K8 051 730 D) isn't going to support phone book (as it does streaming audio)

The BT was most likely not factory fitted. It could be worthwhile to check the coding in vcds, before you buy a 9w7.

Yes that's what I was figuring - the dealer charged full price for bluetooth and put in a "cheapie".

It's at least worth hooking up to with VCDS to see if the functionality can be enabled. If I didn't have to spend $300 on 9w7 and then mess around fitting it that would be good.

It's not that hard to fit it.
+ you will always get something for the old BT when you sell it. If it comes to it.

Yeah I know. I've already had the stereo out twice - once to fit the RCD510 and second time to locate the bluetooth unit

It's just a bit of a messing around to install the microphone (if I change over cabling too).

                    Hi Tigger
I have just bought another RCD 510 and tested it in my Tiguan last week to check the pin supplied was correct and to test the RVC connection as I am planning to purchase another Tiguan soon. I think you will need to get access to a VCDS cable as you need to code the unit to your Bluetooth module just like I had to do with the RVC . I did see a byte/bit to toggle on and off in the radio module unfortunately I do not have a Bluetooth module to validate your issue. The fact that you do not have the telephone option in the setup menu in the RCD 510 implies that the unit has not been coded to recognize the BT module.

I have noticed some mobile phones do not transfer via BT their phone book details on my SIM card or phone memory to my audio unit in my BMW. Have you tried another mobile brand Nokia iPhone? just a thought!
Do you have a copy of the RCD 510 manual? I had a quick glance at mine and it appears there are number of steps to be done to get the phone book into the radio unit's memory.

At the moment I have exactly the same functionality as I had before with my RCD310 and bluetooth kit.

After a little more searching I found the answer to a lot of my questions here: Telephone Retrofitting - Ross-Tech Wiki

Lists just about every bluetooth unit and the functions that they support.

So the end result is that the Novero HT-3 unit I have currently installed doesn't support BAP protocol (used for white MFD's). Instead it supports the older DDP used on the old red MFD so I'll definitely need to change bluetooth units to get info displayed on my white MFD.

You should have no problem selling it as those BT modules are rare and as I understand it command a higher second hand value than the BAP only protocol units. However, I would still try and access a VCDS cable to check out your configuration. VCDS should at least allow the phone to be answered by the button on the steering wheel. The Ross tech web page you refer to indicates your unit supports both protocols which means it was never configured properly by the dealer and confirms your suspicion it was a quick aftermarket fitting. If it was configured for BAP then you should have some functions on your MFD from what I can make out on my web research.

I will be definitely asking the dealer about this when it comes to the purchase of my new Tiguan as I have already bought another RCD510 unit to install in the car and will be rather annoyed if they only installed a 9W2 module instead of a 9W7 unit.

Another Tiguan owner has asked me to look into installing a basic Bluetooth unit in their car. I have found an identical unit to yours from an eBay seller in Sydney for $220 inclusive of postage, he has offered to send me an installation guide to allow me to assess my capability of doing a DIY before I purchase the kit. I will advise further if he sends it to me.

Tigger, the 9W7 unit will ask to download the phone book off your phone the first time you pair to it do I would say that seeing as the unit that is installed in your car isn't factory, that is probably a good reason why it won't download. The older 9w2 would also download the phone book so if I was in your shoes and you really want the ful factory capabilities of downloaded phone book an on screen dialing etc, go the 9w7.

Yeah I figure that a full functon bluetooth unit is going to be cheaper than getting pulled over, a ticket and 3 demerit points.

OK so now I've replaced the bluetooth unit with 9w7 and get all the phonebook function going. Phone appears in the white MFD and 6 presets on the RCD510.

I was pulling my hair out yesterday as the bluetooth unit wasn't getting found.

I discovered the problem this morning. I had to pull the bluetooth connector out of it's holder to run the cable from the dash to under the drivers seat. When I put the connector block back into the holder I had put it back together incorrectly.

I discovered it when looking at the pinout for the connector this morning.

Anyway put the connector back together properly and worked first time - massive relief.
