  • Samsung Galaxy on MDi

switched over from iphone. how does samsung galaxy connect to the MDI?
and can i control all the songs like in iphone.

I would imagine you just connect your USB to Micro USB cable into the MDI and then connect that to the phone.

    You'll need this adapter though:

Bluetooth audio streaming might be easier if you have that option in the car.

Plug your phone in using the appropriate cable (the USB one).

On your phone, go to Settings -> Wifi and Network -> USB Utilities -> Connect Storage to PC

You should be able to browse the music on your phone like it's standard USB storage.

I'm just taking a guess here.
I don't have an Android phone.

Some people opt for one cable and some just get what they're given. Usually depends on the dealer.

Should work fine if the phone connects as a Mass Storage class device. Either it will work 100% with all the scrolling features or it won't work at all. There might be a setting you have to change as mentioned ^ but I'm confident it'll be fine. If I get a chance & if I remember to bring the cable I'll see if my S2 running ICS plays nice with it. Since I have the RNS510 all my music is already on the car's HDD so no need to use the phone.

I couldn't get my sgs2 to show up the option of the cable connected (I use debug mode and select mass storage if I want to connect to a PC) so the mdi is a glorified phone charger for me (Bluetooth streaming works fine).

I have two cables as well, the normal MDI -> Standard USB head and the MDI -> iPhone which I had been using more a less to charge the iPhone and managing my playlist normally to stream via bluetooth on the RCD unit.

I've purchased a spare USB micro USB cable as I've recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy S3, which currently has no issues syncing via bluetooth to my RCD either, USB functionality not tested tho.

I find operating music via the MDI to be frustrating and slow, it's a lot quicker to access on your phone which just streams via BT

Do you only stream via the built in Music player or can you also stream with other apps such as TuneIn Radio (Internet), BeyondPod (podcasts), PowerAmp, etc?

Did a quick test at lunch time. If you just plug in the S2 (ICS) at press the MDI button it won't work. Before you connect the USB cable you have to Settings, More, USB Utilities, Connect storage to PC and so on. I was then able to listen to music on my MicroSD card on the phone (couldn't browse the Internal storage, not sure if this would be different if I didn't have a SD card). All tracks/folders listed fine on the RNS510 and wheel controls worked.

If I really wanted to I could use MDI but it's not really something I'd use often. Plus I already have a USB stick with loads of additional music on it, and I can copy files from my S2 to the USB stick using a $2 adapter like this one: eBay Australia: Buy new & used fashion, electronics & home d

lol ok then, but I can only assume the S3 works the same way as my S2 (also running ICS)

Press the Menu key (left of the home key)
In the popup menu press Settings

Under Wifi, Bluetooth, Data Usage, press More...

                            Select USB Utilities

Press Connect Storage to PC button

                            Connect phone to the MDI

Click Turn on USB Storage (this will make your files innaccessible on the phone, some apps will stop working).

If connected to PC drives are mapped for Internal Storage and MicroSD (External_SD). However the MDI can only show one drive as far as I know, in my case it was the Micro SD.
