  • Enabling Mute functionality via steering wheel phone button - Mk6 Golf

    Hi guys,

So, I've searched high and low for a specific answer to the following question; apologies if it's been answered somewhere prominent and I've just not found it!

My Mk6 GTI was factory-fitted with the RNS-510 and Dynaudio. I do not have any form of bluetooth installed. All of my steering wheel buttons work, with the exception of the phone button (centre of the left-hand-side group of buttons), which has no effect, and never has, since delivery. The "Phone" button on the RNS does mute/pause audio. My question is - what can I do to enable the phone button to perform the same function as the "Phone" button on the head unit?

Here is the coding for my steering wheel module (I have VCDS):

    Code:
Address 16: Steering wheel Labels: 1K0-953-549-MY9.lbl
       Part No SW: 1K0 953 549 CD HW: 1K0 953 549 CD
       Component: J0527 056 0111
       Coding: 0001832
       Shop #: WSC 01357 011 00200
       VCID: 76CD31AB01DC1C9

       Subsystem 1 - Part No: 5K0 959 542 Labels: 3C8-959-537.CLB
       Component: E221__MFL-TAS H05 0010
       Coding: 00000131
       Shop #: WSC 00000

    No fault code found.
Any help would be much appreciated!

If coded correctly it's the Microphone button that acts as a pause/mute button, not the Telephone button (which will do nothing). Note the digit for Push to Talk below:

Use the yellow Help tool-tip to work out the right code for you:

Change your 0001832 to 0001632 and you should be golden (assuming your control module and yellow tooltip are the same as mine).

      Thanks very much Ryan!

My microphone button currently activates voice control... which is what I would have expected it'd do by default? I've read references to the phone button on the wheel acting as the mute button in other cars (although to be fair a lot of that comes from VWVortex etc and describes cars from other markets) - are you sure it's supposed to be non-functional without Bluetooth installed? Seems strange given the behaviour of the "Phone" button on the RNS itself.

Yep, changing that code in VCDS controls what the microphone button does, not the phone button. Speech recognition still has ways to go plus I never wired mine up properly so I much prefer (and use more often) the mute function - so that's what I've got it set as.

Gotcha. I never use the voice control either, but mute would be very handy (am sick and tired of reaching over to the head unit when I need to pause something!), so I'll give the recode a go and report back. I'm 99% sure my tooltip bubble is the same as yours in the steering module (J527).

Just an update on this; I coded my steering wheel controller to 0001632 as suggested (tiptronic without push-to-talk), and it worked a treat. Thanks again Ryan_R!

is that muting of the audio, or muting an in-progress phone call?

Audio. As per my first post, I don't have bluetooth installed, so no phone calls.
