  • RCD510 won't display phone books from paired phones correctly

    Hi all,

Been lurking around here for a while and I've searched for this problem but can't seem to find any solutions and hoping someone might be able to help. I have purchased an Aussie RCD510 from E Bay (one from someone upgrading to Sat Nav). Fitted it today with instructions found on here and just about everything works great except for viewing the phone book from a bluetooth connected phone. The phone book displays but the info within seems jumbled, the numbers behind each contact appear slightly messed up (sometimes with a combination of two contacts in one) and when I try to dial a number via the touchscreen I get the message "dial up failed". I've tried clearing the bluetooth connection and establishing it again but it's still the same. I've tried two different phones and with both of them the phone book issue is there. I can access dialled numbers, missed calls, etc and dial from there fine, I only get "dial up failed" when dialling from the phone book. I can however go into the MFD via the steering wheel controls and access the phone book okay from here and this works, but I would obviously much rather to be able to use the touchscreen. Maybe the RCD510 is conflicted with the MFD as it thinks there's still a RCD310 there??? Don't know.

I'm not sure of the bluetooth version but the car is a MY12 Golf Comfortline.

Thanks for a great site and any help would be much appreciated.

Firstly, try re-starting the BT module in the foam box under your seat. You should be able to lift it up (be careful, the velcro adhesive strips like to come off and stick to the carpet, use a torch and make sure this doesn't happen - if it does, just peel them off the carpet and re-affix to the foam container). Once you have the box up, you'll see obviously the connector you need to unplug, it has a mechanism that opens up, so don't just yank on it.

If this fails; get someone to scan your car using a VAGCOM cable to check for any errors that may explain the behavior.

At a pinch, I'd say the RCD unit is screwed if the reboot fails to do anything. I've installed tons of these in cars with factory bluetooth such as yours and never experienced such issues. Even when the BT module has a sad (and they do from time to time, the A2DP ceases working, bluetooth stops responding completely), they never exhibit this behavior. The fact it works from the MFD without incident = BT module is happy in the pants.

Thanks Mythik, I've tried the bluetooth reset thing that you suggested and there's no change. It's strange because every other function in the RCD510 unit works well, except for the phone book thing. I guess if it is a screwed unit I could try contacting the E Bay seller and ask if there were any issues previously with the unit, in looking back at the E Bay listing it lists the unit as "new" and going by appearance it looks that way. I suppose if the unit is screwed I could explore options in E Bay to return it but I suppose I would need to confirm that with the VAGCOM cable. Don't suppose any VW owners in Ballarat Vic have one of these cables?

thanks for the offer, I phoned the dealer where I got the car from and one of their service guys said he's "pretty confident" that some coding should fix the phone book problem. I'll get some coding done by them at the next service. Will wait and see I guess.

            Thanks for the replies guys.

I am having exactly the same issue. Everything else works, MFD, bluetooth streaming, dialing numbers from my phone book using the MFD and steering wheel controls and I can return missed calls from the last calls list on the RCD. But when I download the phone book to the radio, the names are all good, but the numbers are complete garbage. This must be a software issue or incompatibility.

@herbo: You ever get this sorted mate?

Sounds like an RCD510 software issue

RCD 510 190 part numbers dont show phone book or show BT music streaming info. 190A and 190B units do show this info. If your start up screen has colours blue and green in the logo then its a older version.
