Looking to buy Golf R32 but have Sat Nav concerns

Hi all,

I am thinking of purchasing a R32, and have been doing some research into the Sat Nav options before i choose to buy a car.

Initially I was just looking for cars with factory fitted Sat nav - which I presume is the RNS 510 model. Naturally this filters out a good many R32's. However my understanding is that the factory fitted version does not have speed/saftey cam info on them with audible alerts, (Having read many threads this still doesn't seem to be an option?), and the map interface isn't all that great either.

So then i started looking at alternatives and read yet more threads on the various options:

Zenec NC2010
Dig Option
Kenwood DNX520 (though not sure that works in Aus?)
Pioneer F9310BT

So it seems as though maybe I should just try to get an R32 without the factory Sat Nav (which should be a little cheaper), and then fit one of the aftermarket options.

I really like the idea of having the navigation turn information repeating in the MFD, and it seems as though the Zenec option will do this (with some coding). However i just wanted to make sure that there wasn't more than one version of MFD, and therefore compatibility issues?
The reason I ask is a i saw a 2007 car (without factory fitted sat nav) and the MFD displayed the gear selection in a column on the right, however in a 2008 car (with factory fitted satnav) the gear selection was at the bottom.
Is it just a gui thing because one had satnav and the other didn't, or are there different versions of MFD screen that i need to consider?

I presume if i want the navigation to appear in the MFD then Zenec is my only option?

If you want traffic updates and all that jazz you are best to just get a tomtom or navman one as it is a lot cheaper for the limited times you will use your aftermarket nav unit.

thanks, but don't need the traffic updates - just speed camera / school zone audible alerts and the navigation should repeat in the MFD. I want a factory-fit type nav as don't want to have to remove anything everytime you park the car somewhere.

I think you'll find that pre-08 models without sat-nav factory fitted only have half-MFD which even if you add sat-nav wouldn't display the nav-info. Full sized MFD became standard in 08 models.

I think there are some Chinese ones that seem to work with the MFD

I liked that it even had OPS. Not sure if it's compatible with the R32.

I prefer a Garmin 3790T. I like that it has voice commands. Slim. And there's a lifetime map update (free if you purchase it during the offer period). I also have an Alpine INA W900 but that doesn't have lifetime map updates. It does work with the steering wheel controls.

I have an 08 R32 will full height MFD, the car originally came with the RCD300.
The previous owner retrofitted an RNS-510 into the car with the iPod MDI kit and sat antenna, he had to take the car to VW for them to code the unit to work with the MDF and wheel controls.
I now have a unit which integrates properly with MDF for navigation,etc.
Recently the maps were updated for the RNS510 to V5, they now include speed limit display, in addition I have loaded up a set of custom POI's (from another member on this forum) and the unit gives me a visual indication of speed and red light cameras on the map. I find this useful as it is free and easy for me to use, I have a Garmin 3790T which I used to use prior to getting this car, but it never told me about cameras and I didnt want to mess around loading custom POI's. The custom POI's in the RNS510 can even show on the map when im near BP service stations and a heap of other places like fast food places,etc...

The RNS510 is a good factory match for an R32 and I have been pretty happy with what I have been able to achieve with it.

Thanks astormsau -I presume though that even with the v5 maps you just get the icons appear on the screen but no audible alert to the speed camera?

Correct just the icons. They are treated as a Point of Interest and I dont believe the unit has the capability to give an audible notification of points of interest.
