  • Mk 5 Golf Head Unit Upgrade.

G'day, Just recently I purchased a 2005 Golf 1.6 Comfortline, fitted with a RCD 300 head unit. Whilst trolling through ebay the other day I came across a RCD 310 at the right price, taken out of a 2011 Tiguan. Can anyone tell me if they are a direct swap, or are they incompatible? Any tips or comments appreciated. Thanks.

Most likely you will have to upgrade canbus gateway to prevent battery drain. The RCD510 is much better option and only probably $100 more. I got ours for $220 delivered.

I'm a bit of a novice here. What needs to be done to upgrade the canbus? More importantly, what is a canbus?

Anything 3rd Generation will most likely need a CAN BUS upgrade.
If you're looking to not have to upgrade it, any 2nd generation is direct swap. Ie/ RCD 300, RCD500.

What are you looking to get out of your headunit? 6 stacker? mp3? GPS?

If you got the RCD310, It probably wouldn't be worth it money wise. Plus, It's hideous.

This thread might be of use to you, I used it when I upgraded:
          Upgrading 2nd generation radios (RCD 300, RCD 500) to 3rd generation (RCD 210, RCD 310, RNS 310, RCD 510) power drain issue | my-gti.com

ive got a RCD310 that came out of a 2011 tiguan, never used. have got the pin code supplied but not sure if its locked or not ...
PM me for a price, its very cheap !!!

just sitting here in a vw box in my garage , time for an autumn spring clean

agreed with the comment above, if you just want mp3 cd playback go the rcd310, if you want to use sd cards, go the rcd510....

your car is an 2005 model, not compatible with it unless you change the canbus ( module that controls the electrics) and then it has to get coded by a person who has a special cable for volkswagens called vagcom/vcds.

There are many threads to search up if you do get stuck ! pm

Thanks to everyone for your input. I'll have to have a think about it. Anyone know what sort of money to upgrade to later canbus and then get it all programmed to suit?
