  • Updating maps (v5) and firmware (3810) in my RNS510

    All

I upgraded by firmware tonight and worked like a charm. I took pics along the way and will try and post these tomorrow to help those doing it. I have a C unit, which I only found out the other day after having to get a chum (cheers Gavin) changing the VAGCOM setting to allow me access. My unit was HW version H06 and SW version 2680 from the factory. 2010 MY GTI.

I had upgraded the maps a few months ago from the V3 that the car came with to V4 - which I can see from the screen was map version 73603. All was working fine.

I then updated to a downloaded V5 maps (about a week ago. This changed my maps to map version 7679.

Immediately, the speed limit came on the screen so this was with SW version 2680. All worked fine changing as I drove along. No other point noted although there was the option to add this via a check box.

I then added the firmware tonight. Took a total of 43 mins from start to finish. Took various photos along the way. Was scary at times when for about 6 mins it apparently did nothing (it was quiet at night too so no whirring or anything) but was fine. After numerous reboots it gave the the success message...

Now, there is no setup screen - when you hold down the button, and it goes to the Radio Service Ode, I have a third option that says Version Information and it has what I need in there.

Mu unit has upgraded to D spec (as I heard and read it would) and my SW version is 3810.

I then had to reinstall the maps but what was very interesting is that having updated the firmware and then adding the maps, all my previous destinations remain intact!

Also, another big difference with the V5 maps and this firmware is that when i hit the EXTRAS button, it now gives way more options, such as POI Selection, Lane Guidance, Day/Night option. None of these were there before.

Thus I'm pleased I did it. About 70 mins all up once the maps were loaded and will test tomorrow and post all the images, but if anyone is in Melbourne and feels they need support from a one timer non-virgin updater, I'll happily help. I also have the 3810 disk available too.

    Good luck

    Andy

As I glibly type last night, this morning I see one issue - the screen flickers. Not as in on and off but between brightness levels. Does not seem to do it on day mode but in night mode you can see it almost trying to get the right intensity and never settling down.

    Anyone else seen this?

My C unit running 2680 has all these options. Sure you just didn't notice earlier?

See my reply in your other thread - this is normal behaviour by the sound of things.

Thanks Adam - must be down to maps as V4.0 did not have these options I'm pretty certain.

As for the flickering this is very much not normal - a residue of the firmware upgrade so may have to revert back to a former one...

Strange, I just went from v3 to v5 a couple of weeks back, but those options were present for me on v3 also.

          Adam

It could have been me but I had maps v4.0 (not 4.1) so maybe this was something that changed as well.

In regards the flickering, will upgrade to 3970 today and see if that stops it. The flickering is only when a lower light is required (darkness etc) but you can be stationery with no difference in ambient light and it flickers all the time. Thus definitely firmware related.

Will advise if 3970 cures the issue....

Actually, I wonder if it was because my original firmware was 2680 and this did not allow it - v3 maps I know did NOT have this option so suspect this firmware did not allow for it. The things you learn eh!

mine is still running on fw 2724 (vw's equivalent of 2720), and it has all of the above - lane guidance, day/night, poi etc etc.
i'm not sure about poi, but the others were definately there before when i was still using v3 maps.

            i'm currently on v5.

how is flickering now - is it all gone?

              Thanks darkshadow.

Flickering all gone. 3970 cured the problem as advised so I love it. The upgrade from 2 to 3810 did require maps to be reinstalled. 3810 to 3970 did not require the maps to be reinstalled.

I can confirm that running 2680 did NOT give me the options of things like lane guidance etc. This is all new to me on this unit, so all looking good. Not many people seem to have 2680 either.

So v5 maps working fine. Yet to see lane guidance in action.

certainly, the upgrade in firmware means less of a touch on the screen, there are more options such as 5 levels of brightness as the default 'dark' setting) and other things such as the ipod controls respond quicker than they did. It's just faster.

Actually, a good indication for me of the speed increase is when using the birds eye view (hit the rocket and it flies out then flies back in again). In the same location with no POI's installed, the new firmware is faster and smoother. Still a bit jumpy but definitely better.

              Impressed so far.

So that's odd - I'm running 2680 with v5 maps, and do have the Lane Guidance option, and am 99% sure I had that option with the v3 maps also. I'm not sure specifically what constitutes Lane Guidance in practise (only use my nav maybe once a year anyway!), so I don't know if it actually works or not.

                  Hi Adam

Fair point and your ascertain is now having me doubting what I said. However, last night I used it and I assume lane guidance is the white arrows in the blue boxes at the top of the screen? If it is then yes, I have had that before. However, when I hit the Extras button now I have the ability to turn that off. Pretty certain that was never an option before.

TBH i was getting excited about lane guidance being like Tomtom's lane guidance system. More fool me...

Ah gotcha; yep, I have that too and always have. Not much to get excited about in the end really! Oh well.

                      Hi Andy,

I've read your post with much interest and would like to upgrade my RNS510 firmware as well. I'm not sure of the procedure however and I'm also not sure what version I'm currently running. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

                      Regards
