I've come to having a golf by way of a few Commodore station wagons. Common practice to reduce road noise from the rear was for me to install some thick rubber or foam carpet underlay under the carpet in the boot. The noise was largely evident if you sat in the back seat before the rubber underlay was installed. I've just got my 2011 118TSI and am the only driver so dont get a chance to sit in the back seat and see if any noise is emanating from there. I was looking at putting in sound deadening and new speakers into the front doors and was wondering whether anyone else had noticed noise from the boot or tried to reduce road noise from there?

The boot won't be the biggest issue with road noise in the Golf, it's actually the wheel arches, front and rear. Removing the plastic splashguards will reveal your wheel arches and you'll see that there is bugger all deadening applied. I'm actually planning on applying deadening paint to the wheel arches of my passat next week. I'll try and photograph it, but this should really kill the road noise. Dynamatting your boot will help, but I'd also recommend laying dynapad over the top of it as it is designed to kill low frequency noise such as road noise. -
