  • Aftermarket stereo options ?

    Hi All,
Just wondering if anyone has any info on aftermarket stereos for a 118tsi? As always I'm less than impressed with the manufacturer options and have been searching for better components.
    Any links will help.
Also, how do you get the cover off around the existing stereo? I had the bottom clips off and it felt as though the top ones would snap under too much force. This would equal an angry wife.

    Thanks
    Ross.

I've just got myself an 118TSI with the RCD310. I'm also interesting in any advice on upgrading the sound - with an amp, better speakers and some sound deadening.

Dead right man, I've heard a car with exactly what you describe (obviously choice of components has a big effect on cost & sound quality) and it is still fantastic sounding. The extra cost of mine really isn't justified but I just decided that if I was going to do it I would get it done once and exactly what I wanted

What is your budget Ross, and what parts of the stereo would you like to change/improve? And do you plan to do the install yourself, or get a pro to do it?

I have a standard 2011 118TSI. I just went a listened to some Dynaudio speakers and the closest in sound quality that I liked (I'm not an audiophile) was some Audison AVK165 6" splits and an Audison amp, I was quoted $1,650 which included dynamat for the front doors. Will be connecting it to the stock RCD310 head unit. How does that compare with other after market systems that others have installed?

I tried looking up the avk 165, but only found the av k6. Is this it? Retails for around $600. Which is middle ground. Audison r a great brand but like everything, they have middle end and high end products.
Honestly, I sourced my stuff overseas, the bostons I have retail for about $1k, got them for about $380 landed.
I got all my stuff installed and bought for under $1k. I had my own sub tho

Did you pay a visit to FHRX Studios? The Audison Voce range of speakers are very good value for money, but for similar money i have found Crescendo speakers a little more enjoyable to listen to, they just have a bit more life in them compared to the Audison. Nothing wrong with Audison amps though, they're excellent.

That system you have selected is a very good upgrade over stock, installed properly in deadened doors and amped, you will love the difference in sound.

The budget all depends on how much I want something. Right now I'm more interested in adding a different head unit to the car (possibly with gps).
Overall I'm quite happy with the sound from the standard speakers for now, although I have a habit of tinkering and can see a future upgrade after reading a bit. It all depends on the flavour of the month with me.

Sorry for the late reply but this site is intermittent at best when it comes to notifications. It's a similar format to reefcentral and I have the same problem there.

Thanks for the replies. Let the researching begin.

PS. I'm quite capable of doing the install myself but often I can't find the time. I'll do some more research and then come back with some questions.
Thunder outside. Figures since I washed the car this morning.

FHRX are on my list to visit together with Auto Acoustics at St Peters.

                      Hi
That was the coding that they had against the item but I think this is the unit I heard "AUDISON VOCE 6.5" 165MM COMPONENT SPEAKER AVK6 http://www.trendsinc.com/store/images/items/Fullsize/AVK6.jpg" although it had a complete black mesh speaker cover. Cost was $550 the pair and cheaper than the dynaudio (dont have their reference no ) which cost about $900

Not much info on the product. There are plenty of imports that look better at a glance.

I had my eye on this one for a while because it has an 8" screen without looking ugly:

                            Welcome to Audiosources Website

About $450 landed if you buy direct from Audiosources, from memory. There are some crazy headunits out there that run Android Honeycomb, so there are a lot of options lol.

Can you post a link to a unit running honeycomb? Some of the units from Japan are pretty feature packed and sound promising also.
At the end of the day I'm not an audiophile but I do like a level of sound quality that is better than the average car. These days, the only time I get to turn music up loud is when I'm doing long drives. Day to day the features are more important than the sound for me.
