You either have voice control turned off via coding, or the mic is not connected.
    Nevermind,
I recently had a similar issue. My problem was man made, but I agree with kamold. If you are getting "Pardon" twice then "Cancel", and a return to the previous screen it means the system isn't "hearing" an instruction that it can act on. Even if it can't "understand" what you're saying it should try to guess then ask you if its guess is the function that you want looking for a Yes/No response. Something like "Did you want - Navigation?". If the Pardon/Cancel happens when trying any voice instructions to any mode of operation including Bluetooth it would seem that your mic isn't working. Not sure if you've got BT, but if you can hear someone handsfree and they can't hear you, as well as the other voice commands not working then it is highly likely to be a fault in the mic circuit.

It's easy enough to check. I'd check that the mic hasn't been unintentially muted, but I would've thought that it would revert to default (On) after the system is shut down then restarted. Also, if anyone has been accessing your coding recently you might want to ask someone with VCDS to check that the mic is still activated, and that it hasn't been mistakenly coded out. When kamold was good enough to check my coding he found that VCDS threw up a fault indicating an open circuit. Getting your coding checked wont necessarily tell you where the problem is, but will most likely tell you what the problem is - coding or wiring (open circuit).

Do you mean, 'Does the RNS need to load voice 'tags' before voice control will work?' - if so then the answer is no. It just attempts to recognise your commands as spoken eg 'Radio' or 'New destination' or 'stop route guidance'

Thats what I meant. I took it to mean you can add your own voice tags if you are so inclined

There is provision for short and long instructions but I havent bothered following up on it.

Im probably wrong again but did read a bit about it a while ago.

You should get a menu with just the AM and FM radio and a line with Version information That will tell you what it is.

Mine didnt have the secret menu till I went to 39???

If yours is a stock unit, then based on the MY of your Golf, my guess would be that it's a F unit.

However your easiest option is just to pull the unit out and have a look at the sticker. Pretty easy to do on the Mk6 Golf.

My RNS510 is supposed to have voice activation, but can't see how to get it to work, so thought
a firmware upgrade might help.....but unsure how to proceed as there seems to be much
conflicting information on the topic. Also my premium blutooth has low & distorted TX so would
like to address this issue also.

    Keeping holding the button down.

I first tried finding the secret menu while driving and held the button down and didn't pay attention to the screen as some traffic was coming up. When i looked at the screen a minute later i had the secret menu (mind you i have loaded the VIM file mentioned by Aussietig above).

Anyway, tried it at home again and held the button and it didn't work. I eventually figured out that I had to keep holding it, I think there are two menus that come up before the secret menu and i was letting go at the first screen that appeared.

If it already has 27xx firmware then it won't be able to update without enabling downgrade. Best option for upgrade would be to go to the 39xx custom firmware...

From memory, the VIM iso also has the secret menu enabled.

So you could enable it this way, whilst also enabling VIM.
