  • RNS 510 factory installed 2011 Polo?

    Hi all....
im hoping someone can answer this for me. Can a RNS510 unit be installed into a 2011 Polo? I'm in the process of working out the finer details of my gti order and the sales dude tells me that the RNS510 is a separate unit to the stereo and costs $5K!!! I have a price list from a VW dealer i saw on the weekend and they are charging $2500 for the RNS Sat Nav unit on the golf gti...... couldn't they just pop one into a polo?

5k? Your sales guy is smoking some bad stuff.
2.5k is the general price on the RNS510, but that usually excludes bluetooth, ipod integration, etc.

Have you considered the Zenec unit?

Yes you can retrofit them in yourself. Plenty of members here have done it. Check out the Polo specific forum. Plenty of info around here.

Your salesman is definitely smoking something funny! $2500 is the price if you get it factory fitted. Dealer fitted is meant to be $3500.

Or if you DIY, it's about $1000-$1200 for the RNS510 from eBay. Installation is pretty simple (almost plug and play except that you'll have to fiddle a lil bit with the GPS antenna placement - and probably do some VCDS coding for the MFD)

        Hey Benni86
I did the same as you. I got the dealer to fit an RNS510. He charged me $2200 - and took my old 310.
He ordered another car from VW with the RNS510 and simply swapped them over. I bit of coding by his tech man, and the car was good to go.

If you get him down to 2.2 - 2.5k you wont regret the upgrade

I had a... well, moment not too long after ordering and was lost in Hornsby of all areas... cracked it big time and called the dealer and insisted they put the RNS 510 in, he laughed when i said that i was lost in hornsby and f-ed off and this was my solution for it to never happen again. paid $2200 all up for it and not regretting it at all (although i dont have the car yet)

Didn't the Polo have a different MDI that meant you didn't quite have the same integration as the Golf when retrofitting, or has that changed with the latest most expensive models?

$2200 is damn good compared to what they're charging up at Mascot... they want $3300 from me to put the RNS510 in.

In which case, I'm hoping you can help me out - they didn't do anything like install anything else except the RNS 510 and code it in to work with the buttons on the steering and etc right? (I'm trying to justify why the Mascot dealer is charging so much - there's probably no other reason than a hilarious gouge).

If that's what the Hornsby VW dealer is charging, am I allowed to head up to the Hornsby dealer instead to get my RNS510 fitted? (they don't have any rules against going between dealers for parts and service right?) That and of course, if they can still do it for that price, I'm all for it. That and since I'm getting it fitted by a genuine VW accessory dealer, I doubt they can call me out and 'pulling my warranty out' because it's fitted at a genuine VW dealer. - On that note, I had a quick google of any dealers up at Hornsby... is that the McCarroll's VW Dealership up in Waitara?

So yeah, any thoughts or anything you could tell me to help?

Standard Polo doesn't have the full screen (basic one like in most transporters and caddys). But the GTI has MDI, BT and MFD standard.

$2500 is the list price, I'm sure many dealers around sydney would do it for you that price. The JKU.com.au guy in the thread above will sell you the unit for $1300 (version H is the best), and it's pretty easy to install (you might be able to get a dealer to put it in for a couple hundred). There is zero issue warranty wise because it's a VW genuine part.

Dealers are just like franchises, if the one you're at is behaving like a muppet, there is no obligation to go back to them after getting your car.

Thanks heaps man, yeah, I have spent way too many sleepless nights trawling these forums about this GPS. I think I'd LOVE to install it myself, but I just don't want to break something in the process.

As much as I would enjoy patting a hole through my back from the sense of achievement of installing my own GPS into the car, no matter how many hours I stare at the VCDS coding pages and vague references between which numbers mean which functions and which devices - I don't think I'm going to go there and will just have to enlist the help to code it for me.

Next step after installing the GPS is probably tearing out that bluetooth unit sprouting forth from the dashboard, and putting in something a bit more subtle, like one of those under-the-seat arrangements I keep hearing about.

And then maybe looking to acquiring a set of 16" or 17" rims to complete my machine. Maybe much later.

Its super easy for someone familiar with VCDS to fully install the RNS, they just go to the CAN Gateway -> Installation list -> Tick Navigation

As with the BT screen, the cradle it is in cannot be removed, but you can take out the screen. You'll need VCDS for that too, more details are in my signature below.

You can also grab a dock for your phone online, read this post for more info.
