  • Install RCD510 in non-VW?

    Hi guys,

Now that I have replaced my RCD510 with a RNS510 I've got a decision to make. The radio in my wife's Subaru Outback is pretty much dead, CD and Tape deck no longer work and there is no AUX capability, so I'm planning on installing something after market. My question is, could the RCD510 be installed, or does it have to many dependencies on the VW? I'm guessing things like bluetooth and MDI would be too hard to setup but thought I'd ask the question here before I do anything.

The other option is sell the RCD510 and buy something a little more "generic". What do you guys think?

Would the RCD510 actually physically fit in the Outback? Not sure if the wiring would be same/similar plug and play.

I'd be interested in taking the RCD510 off your hands if you go down the path of selling it at the right price. How old and what condition?

Yes, you can install an RNS/RCD in other cars, but you will need a CANBUS emulator to have it run. You can get them for about $100 off eBay.

You will need an antenna adaptor to dual fakra as well.

I would suggest the bigger issue is fitting it.

It will fit, I've got a dual din adapter to replace the OEM subaru system. Hmmm....a CANBUS emulator you say, this is starting to sound a little more complicated than I had hoped

It's practically brand new, only in the car for 1 week before the RNS510 retrofit

PM me if you would like any additional info.

much easier to go the aftermarket double DIN route with this one... the VW units are double-DIN for mounting but the faceplate is a unique shape, you'd have to trim your dash plastic to fit it. The VW units are screwed onto the dashboard from the front.

              Hi Lams,

Yep, that's pretty much my conclusion as well now, I didn't realise I would need to customise the faceplate, that sealed it for me

Now I need to choose an appropriate double din system, omg what a nightmare, I could read Internet review for months!

I'd be wandering into my local JB or car stereo store - you might be surprised at what you can get for what you would sell the RCD510 for. And they are a good upgrade for the RCD500 or RCD310 so you shouldn't have any problems moving it. (Just looked - an Alpine, single DIN, Bluetooth / Ipod / Front Aux in can be had for $300)
Most retailers will install, or you can buy aftermarket plug and play leads for (easy) DIY. If you ahve a 2 DIN unit you can also install a dash pocket and a single DIN unit.

not sure you need the emulator.

My mates golf 5 with rcd510 installed has the can wires disconnected to stop the battery drain until he gets new gateway. Only thing that changes is you have to manually turn it off when you get out and no steering wheel function.

Good advice, thanks. I'll head in to JB tomorrow for a look around. I'll have room for a 2 DIN and just assumed that is what I would have to replace with, but now that you mention a dash pocket it's opened up a whole new world of possibilities. I'm a sparky so I'm pretty comfortable doing the installation, and I love that sense of achievement you get when you step back and see your work at the end of the day. And hey, if I screw it up, THEN I can visit an installer

I guess I could throw it in as see what happens, I'm aiming to get a RCD510 to ISO harness adapter, then an ISO to whatever I buy adapter to reduce cutting and soldering. An extra $20 to see how the RCD510 works would be OK.

You have made me stop and think about the existing steering wheel controls though, would those be a feature of the radio, or a feature of the car? I mean, can I buy a radio that will work with the steering controls, or will they be dead with anything non OEM?

Your outback has a tape deck and steering wheel controls?

Honestly, save the hassle, sell the rcd510 for $300-350 on these forums, buy a double din non gps unit from overseas (sonicelectronix, etc) buy a steering wheel control module as well and u can have a brand name hu with better audio output for about $300 on top
