MFD2 with 6 Disc changer- Change to MDI

Hi all,

I'm sure this topic has been raised before, but as I have only recently switched from my Caddy Van to a 2006 GTI DSG (and loving it ) I just want to get an accurate answer from people that have been down this path before.
I have an MFD2 Nav Unit with the 6 CD Changer in the centre console. I want to remove the CD changer and install the Ipod Media-In unit so;

1. Does the Media-In unit directly replace the CD changer and fits in the same spot (I suspect that it does)

2. Does the Media-In unit plug straight on to the same cable that was plugged into the CD changer, or do I need to route the lead that comes with the Media-In kit.

3. Can someone advise instructions on how-to-remove the CD changer and replace it with the Media-In Unit.

4. I think the MFD2 has a version 11 or 12 DVD or CD loaded into it. How much difference or detail is on the latest version? (Vers.16 I think)

The MDI does not work with the MFD2 ... there is an Ipod adapaer availble for it - but it is pretty useless and only allows you to play playlists.

I've got the MFD2 with ipod cable. The ipod cable is plugged into the unit where the CD changer would have been plugged in. The CD changer remains installed in the armrest bin but becomes defunct, the ipod cable comes out in the glovebox.

The MFD2 does have pretty limited functionality with the ipod. It will basically read the first 5 playlists stored on the ipod - they become the first 5 "disks" showing up on the head unit. The 6th disk just shuffles through the whole ipod. But it won't bring up track names or anything.

As for whether it's worth getting the cable or not, I guess it's personal preference. I wouldn't got so far as to say that it's useless. All I do is make sure I regularly update my playlists with the genres of music I want and use it like an ipod shuffle. That works fine for my needs. If you want more functionality, look at buying an RNS 510 off ebay and get it retrofitted...

Best option if you wanted media in unit is to replace head unit with either rcd 510 or rns 510, you would only need the remove the stacker in the centre console and just fit in the media in unit and wire it up some trim may have to be removed for the installation but make sure you buy it with the complete fitting kit. Check e bay...

Thanks guys for the replies. I changed an RCD310 to a 510 in my Caddy when I owned it, but I believe changing the MFD2 to RNS510 will require a Canbus upgrade (am I correct?). The MFD2 was probably state-of-the-art a few years back, but it's NAV system is very poor compared to a Garmin or Navman. It looks like I'll have to do the RNS510 upgade, Cheers.

What version of CD software do you run in the MFD2 ? Mine is version 12 and I was wondering if it's worthwhile updating to the latest (Version 16)

Sadly I can't help you, as I have version 12 as well. I've thought about updating too, but didn't think it was worth it yet as the maps are only a few years old.

The price of the updated Cd has dropped somewhat, about $199. I'm in tw minds what to do. Have been thinking about the RNS510 upgrade, but I like the look of the MFD2 in the Mk5, particularly at night.
