  • Another thread about RNS-510 (Golf mk5 gt)

Okay, i know there is a lot of talk about these, however i am finding it hard to find some straight forward answers.

I have an 08 (originally sold in august) golf gt tdi.

I would like to know, if i purchase an RNS-510 version C, Software: 2840, H52.
And i also purchase a vw premium bluetooth kit.

    Will I:
    - be able to integrate the gps into my MFD display?
    - integrate my ipod into the screen? (i have the cable)
    - integrate bluetooth into the screen and possibly mfd?
    - and use the steering wheel buttons to control calls, ipod songs, etc.

    Thank you

ps: quite sure this is what my dash looks like:

You may have an older CANBUS so to avoid any battery drain issues I'd go for a Version B unit and get software under 2600 that way there won't be any chance of it. If you're desperate to get the Version C with 2840 Firmware you may have to upgrade the CANBUS. Not a big deal or overly expensive but if you want true plug and play then go the safe path. If you're buying the unit off Ebay just tell the seller you need a version B and to downgrade the firmware to under 2600. They should be able to do this.

Upon plugging in your probably wont be able to view the GPS on your MFD unit , you need to do a bit of VAGCOM work and tell the car that you have a GPS unit now, then it will come up. You can do this yourself if you have a VAGCOM and there's tutorials online or just wait for your next service at the dealers and ask them to do it - its a 5 minute job.
Lots of bluetooth options for it but the easiest and cheapest by far is the Fiscon Basic Plus unit from Kufatec. Again completely plug and play and it will display on your MFD + display extra stuff too like boost pressure ect. The premium bluetooth kit is apparently better but it can be a pain to install and code to the radio. I've read about lots of issues. Again go with whats safe. Here's a link to the Fiscon unit.

FISCON Bluetooth Handsfree - Basic-Plus - VW, Skoda [36496] - $568.95 : Kufatec USA, Inc., The #1 Supplier of OEM Volkswagen & Audi Retrofit Harnesses in the World

Not sure about Ipod connection and controls - I know it can be done but I don't think its as simple as plugging a cable in - I think there's some kind of Ipod module you need and probably more vagcom work.

Thanks Poyta for the information, is there any way I can find out my CANBUS version?
Apart from that it sounds like it will have full integration, if anyone knows about the ipod connectivity that would be awesome.

ps. my current headunit (stock vw) has ipod connectivity, can I use the module from this?

        Apparently only via VAGCOM

If you have a full height MFD there is a very good chance you have the right version CANBUS. I have a June 07 built MY08 R32 and that didn't need an upgrade. For Bluetooth I would suggest the 729 b skoda unit. This is the equivalent to factory premium without the fiscon advertising all over it. I had the original iPod cable too, it behaves like a stacker and when I changed over to the RNS it was cutting all the mid and low end off the audio, plus you only ever see track 1 on the display and have no control. Buy an MDI retrofit kit with the extended cable while you're buying parts and do it all in one go. I just changed mine over and it's heaps better.

If you have any other questions just ask, I've done most of these upgrades and Bluetooth is the only one I'm left to do. I have a 729b kit on order.

Argh things are stacking up now

            canbus- $130
            MDI - $250
            rns-510 - $1k

might have to leave blue tooth for now, but that is still a lot more than I wanted to pay

If you car was delivered in August 08 it was probably built in May/June 08 and will have a new CAN bus already installed.

So do you yourself a favour and get a Version B with lower firmware. I got mine for just over $700 with delivery. Find an ebay ad with "make an offer" and ask the seller. He'll be more likely to agree if its a Version B. The C's are still pricey.

The B version has a limitation on the firmware it will upgrade to, this will put limits on SD card size and probably other things, I'm not too sure off the top of my head. The other benefit of the C version is that the LED screen is available and it has the voice control option. I personally haven't used a non LED version, but I have heard that they can be hard to see in direct sunlight. I don't get that problem. For an extra couple of hundred dollars now you will be much happier long term. I got mine for under $1000 with one of the make an offer auctions, just be patient and look at what's on offer. also, make sure you get one with Australian maps, and you will need an antenna adapter to make the plugs fit.
