RNS 510 Version F

This popped into my inbox from eBay the other day... from our trusty Polish seller:

Version F of the RNS 510. Firmware shipping is 3970.

Only diff I can see from the ad is is now a 40GB HDD, not 30GB. That's disappointing, surely the cost to VW of going to something like 100GB would only be a couple of dollars.

I believe all D units are 40GB! So that's not a real point of difference.

I'd suggest you should never believe the version you see on the RNS510 screen!

For instance my C unit becomes a D unit on screen, after I updated to FW 3930.

But a VCDS scan never lies and will show you what version unit it really is!


My guess is that it's just a D unit which shows F after installing FW 3970!


At them moment, a D or even F unit (if legit) is like Crystal Harris!

A bit of waste, since we're still running them on very old V3 maps that can't support all the new functionalites on the newer hardware or FW!

I didn't think updating the F/W version changed the H/W version though? Would have thought that's hardcoded... hence why he put a pic of it saying its HW ver 6 in the listing.

It's the first line that says F on the end that can be changed with FW upgrade.

FWIW, mine is on HW ver 6 and not even D, let alone F unit.

So we thought!

But turns out ... it still has the same file structure as the V3 map (CD_7005) which doesn't recognise any POIs whatsoever (including ones on the disk) on these higher units and/or FWs!

Not necessarily from their point of view ... but I just question whether "V4" is really the right name for this map (if the disk is actually labelled "CD_7360").

Arguably, it's just an updated V3 map!

But ask my 3 yr old what's the next number that comes after 3 and they'll hopefully say 4!
So I think perfectly legal (so to speak) from their point of view to call this is "V4".


But unfortunately for us the V3 map (CD_7005) I believe is based on a Sensis 2009 Q1 compilation and this so called V4 map (CD_7360) is based on a Sensis 2009 Q4 compiliation.

Basically CD_7360 (like CD_7005) is only fully functional running FW 2XXX!


Perhaps calling it "V3.1" or something like that is far less misleading and a lot closer to the truth IMO!


Having said that though, in Europe their V7.1 map is completely different to their V7.0 map and is fully functional running FW 3XXX.

So far more conservative and understated with their numbering (by comparison to our over promised and under delivered map)!
