  • RNS510 Firmware Upgrade to Version 3810 Anyone?

Just wondering whether anyone with a RNS510 version C or earlier have done the above FW upgrade?

More particularly, any feedback as to whether this version still works with our Australian V3 map or even modified ones with personalised POIs.

Can find overseas examples that confirm that it works, but with European V7.0 & 7.1 maps. But can't find any aussie confirmations.

    Anyone?

I have an RNS510 version C which I've upgraded to 3930. I'm using the V3 Australian maps which still work.

No observed problems so far, knock on wood. I haven't personalised any POIs.

      Thanks mate!

That's reassuring to know that it's possible to go even higher!

I'll settle for 3810 for now.

Did you have to reinstall the maps?

          Just finished the upgrade!

Can confirm I lost map and music on HDD. Not a big deal as have original map and music via MDI.

Everything else seems to have stayed the same (e.g. radio & other non-Sat Nav settings) and no adverse impacts on MFD and steering buttons.

However it appears that I have no POIs whatsoever, even the ones supplied on the map disk.

Did you have this problem nhand42?

No, the maps somehow survived, even though the instructions said the maps are deleted by the upgrade.

            Lucky me.

The POI button is grayed out on mine. I've never had a satnav before so didn't realise this feature was supposed to work.

              So that's a bit of a bummer.

Well unfortunately for me, no success. Definitely lost the basic POIs supplied on the V3 map disk.

Haven't been able to reload any POIs back via the DB3 SD card route either (using POInspect0r).

Have rolled back to 2760 for now!

Well to me ... that's a FAIL in terms of upgrading the FW!

But thanks for confirming the same outcome.

On the aesthetic side, just newer graphics and welcome screen.

But more importantly, I was after the ability to upload POIs via SD card.
No need to re-compile a new modified map and iso file, every time you want to add new POI or update an old one.

AFAIK, the latest firmware stores POIs in a new .db3 file format.

But I still haven't worked out whether it's my version C hardware or our Australian map V3 (dated 2009) that is causing POI button to be greyed out. In other words, no original or customised POIs when running the higher 38XX or 39XX FWs.

I'm hoping someone with the latest D version unit can confirm whether they have functioning POI button, when running the Australian V3 map.

A member with D version unit running FW 3890 and Australian V3 map has confirmed that they have no POIs also.

So this confirms (at least for me) the problem is not hardware or firmware, but our fricken outdated V3 maps.

Makes sense now ... the POIs on the V3 map disk (i.e. 2009 Sensis map) are not written/saved in the new .db3 file format.

So at this stage ... there's no point upgrading to a D unit, as the higher FW on these units makes the POIs on both original and modified V3 maps redundant, as cannot detect them.

Hopefully next Australian map version (out late 2011/early 2012 according to Sensis) will have POIs in the new file format.

However just need to confirm now whether the D unit will accept custom POIs (if converted and saved in the correct .db3 file format) via the SD card route.

Waiting for this member's response or anyone else with a D unit, willing to conduct this little experiment!

With the help of the member with a D unit running FW3890, we have confirmed that even customised POIs saved on a SD Card (in the correct new .db3 format using POInspect0r) will load successfully onto RNS510 HDD.

But still you can't use them on our V3 maps, as it can't find it on a search (even though system says they're there!).

Have confirmed that POIs on current Europe V7.1 map works overseas under new D unit & the higher FWs.

Unfortunately, we will need to wait for Sensis/VW to get their act together before we can have any usable POIs when Sensis Map v18 is released for RNS510. Hopefully it'll contain the correct ebd folder structure as with overseas maps!

For those running FW 3810 or higher

In the meantime, if you visit this VW USA website and setup an account (which is free), download and use their "NavCompanion" app, you'll be able to just search any address or place (via a Google Map search engine), save it as your "favourite destination" and transfer them onto a SD Card.

It's the closest thing to personalised POIs! And the beauty of it is that all your previous saved destinations database roams with your account!

I've tried it and it definitely reads them (being a modified .vcf file format normally associated with contact cards in MS Outlook).

Only catch is your SD card effectively becomes a second database for your "favourite destinations" which can't be imported into HDD and needs to be permanently left in the RNS510.

Once you insert the SD card, try and look it up within Navigation menu by starting a "new destination"!

You should be able to see an "SD Destinations" option to select them from your SD card.

NOTE: make sure .vcf files have been copied in a folder called exactly "destinations" on the SD card for this to work.
But once you download their "NavCompanion" sync tool, it should automatically transfer and create the files correctly!

Have also noticed with longer use that it may not pick up the destinations list the first time and you may need to escape and press "SD Destinations" on screen again.

Here's one I created, if people want to try and see if it works first: https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B4H...thkey=CLjo3sEL

UPDATE: V4.1 and up maps now have both the old POI file format and also the new db3 format.

So you will have fully functioning POIs (both stock & custom POIs loaded via SD Card) when running any FW 3XXX.

But only fully functioning stock POIs when running FW 2XXX

                            Hi guys,

Recently installed a version D into my MY 11 GTI. Every time I try to select which POI's to load it hangs on the "Please Wait" message, whilst this occurs I can still access the unit as normal but every time I go back to setup it has the please wait message. Is it to do with the maps not supporting POI's or something else?

                            Any ideas.

                            FW: 3890

Yes ... yours is showing the same symptoms of none or lost POIs when running original V3 map disk on higher FW.

All I can say is that the problem is not with the unit itself. I'm currently running FW 3930 on my C unit and had the same problem.

By process of elimination, I do believe that it's a map version issue!

Cause POIs are definitely working and there when running the same V3 map or a modified map disk (with custom POIS) on FW 2760 or lower.

PM me if you want to get rid of the hang problem for now!

I can give you a file that at least loads some POIs into the RNS510 (via the SD card input) in the db3 file format.

NOTE: the POIs loaded still can't be searchable or usable, but the system doesn't hang and just returns "none" result straightaway.

But in a nutshell ... I believe we do not currently have an Australian map with the correct file structure required by the higher firmwares for the POI function to work!

I would most definitely like to be proven wrong! But at this moment, I've not come across any other views (both here and elsewhere)!
