  • R36 RNS 510 Sat Nav Problems

Hi this is my first post as have just found this great site, I am wondering if anyone can help with advice on the following, I am on the Gold Coast and if enter Perth WA into Sat Nav as a destination it displays no route recommendations, it also happens with some other destinations, I just want confirmation that it should display a route even for that distance before I go to the dealer.

Also is there a way to tell from the sat nav unit as to what firmware or map version you have installed?

Also what is the latest map version available?

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

    Cheers

      RNS510 to Perth

A very interesting post. I have an RNS510 Ver B with Version 3 (the latest) maps.

Just tried to enter Perth as a destination and only come up with Perth (Tasmania) and cannot enter Perth WA. I think it is too broad a destination description.

To confirm, I entered Kelmscott, which is a Perth suburb and it provided route guidance and informed me that it was 4118km from here (Bowral NSW) to my destination.

This will probably be the case with other "large" destinations too.

Vers 3 maps (released late09 or early 2010) are still quite dated being at least 4 to 5 years out of date here in Bowral.

Good fun too on a Hume Highway trip to Melbourne with all the changes when the GPS on more than a few occasions informed me to "turn straight ahead here".

For all its faults, and its lack of features found in $150 units, it's still one of the best around, purely because of its info in the MFD
You know you are getting old when you cancel your order for a 3.6 CC and buy an Icelandic Gray TDI CC instead.

Latest update to my ongoing issue any help would be most appreciated.

Firstly I have a MY08 R36 with what I am assured is a genuine VW sat nav unit.
I have had problems with the unit freezing up in certain areas whilst using the sat nav I read on here that both the firmware and maps needed to be updated.

Took my car to the dealer who when i collected it said that the firmware and maps are now updated to latest versions I think they said maps are version 3.

Anyway some problems reoccured whent back to the dealer who advised they would would load the maps from DVD as lasttime they did it via there system upgrade. When't to pick the car up only to be told that the maps on my unit are not upgradable from DVD only via software and that there is no DVD available to upgrade.

Firstly are they correct about upgrading maps via the system upgrade and secondly that they cant be upgraded by DVD and that no DVD is available for this?

Also is there anyway that I can tell what firmware and or map version is installed and do you know what the latest versions of each are?

I am truly sorry to hassle you with this but this has now been going on for months and I am at a loss as to what is correct.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

        Kind regards

        Tim

          Tim,
I had a dealer install my RNS510 and it came with a DVD for installing the maps onto the HDD. They did this for me, but gave me the disk, and importantly the manual. According to the manual the installations and upgrades and done via DVD. I read that v3 is the latest map disk, and that a new one is scheduled for December / January - so can only assume people will be expected to upgrade when it's released - via the DVD again.

Many independent VW service centres seem to have the appropriate software to plug into the VW interface - VAGCOM - get them to do a check on the system status/settings for you if your in doubt with your dealers advice,

          good luck

Thanks for the reply, what really is on concern is the dealer saying my unit is not upgradable via DVD and that both the system and mapping updates are done via there system software I really need to determine if this is correct if anyone can assist further it would be most appreciated.

IMHO...the 'dealer' is full of wank. Talk to the Service Manager.....if still no success...take your business elsewhere

To check what's in your unit, hold down the SETUP button until the detail display comes up, you can then scroll through the various bits of info (good luck making sense of some of them.)

Here's what comes up on the unit in my Mk6 TDI:

                SW-Version 0900
                SV SW-Version C_E0_7.112_t994
                HW Vehicle Ox_C201
                SW Vehicle 0x_442A_3404
                Bootloader Vehicle 0x_442A_0401
                HW Main 00010002000201...
                SW Main /j1.4_P5
                HW Radio A2CSWDNL0010001
                HW DAB —
                SW DAB —
                HW DVDDecoder 004(0x04)
                HW DVD Drive Vers. A2CSB173571
                SW DVD Drive Vers. VW1_C0_C.4.1
                IBOC HW Ver. —
                IBOC SW Ver. —
                HMI XML 1.12.21.0c (EU)
                Text File Vers. 07.12.2007

From which I get the impression that the unit (version B, if it's of any importance) was off-the-shelf and fitted to a stock vehicle after I placed the order (it was going to be a couple of months to delivery, then they "found" one in just a few days.)

The (then new, still current) V3 maps were installed by the dealer at the first service in 2010.

I haven't the slightest doubt that both firmware and software are upgradeable via DVD.

However, since I don't have the V3 map DVD I'm not about to try updating the firmware.
