Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • RNS 510 stuck in german, Reverse camera and media unit not working.

    Hey guys,

This is an amusing, but quite annoying problem that cropped up last week.

It seems like my rns 510 crashed last thursday night. When i started my car the next morning, the display read like it was "stuck" on an mp3 track on the hard drive, with no sound, or ability to switch tracks, or even modes or menus. I turned the car off, removed the key and waited a few seconds.

When I started it up again, the menus had defaulted to German. Although I dont know how to read German, I did remember the the positions of the menus, so was able to find my way into the system menu, and the language selection option. However, if I select English, or even "automatic" the menu text will change to english, but the screen will display "loading desired language" then get stuck on "cannot load desired language".

There is a cancel option on the screen, but it wont work. The only way to get out of this is to use the 3 button reset (RW, FF and star i think) to reset the RNS unit. It will then default back to German.

In addition to being stuck in German, a more pressing issue is the fact that a large number of the RNS functions dont work at all now. For example -

    - the Reverse camera doesn't work at all. Mechanically I can hear it open in the tailgate, but no image displays on the RNS 510.
    - no audio works at all. Mp3s from the units hard drive, mp3s from a SD card, even aux input produce no sound whatsoever. I haven't tried a CD or DVD but imagine it will be the same story.
    - Radio doesn't work at all.
    - Navigation does work (in German) and I get a map display, but navigation directions no longer show up on the MFD between the tacho and the speedo. Additionally, audio information no longer shows up on the MFD either.

Needless to say, Ive got a warranty service booked in for the Friday. The car is fairly new, bought last may, with around 8100kms on the clock.

Just wondering if anyone else has had similar issues?

Will let you know what the resolution is, regardless.

    cheers

    thanks dermot,

I was never given an actual NAV dvd when i bought the car - everything was preisntalled when i got it. So I'll have to take it back to the dealer to get that done.

I wonder if that will fix all the other issues like the RVC, audio and MFD syncronisation....

    Cheers

Every one here knows you should get the DVD GPS Disc when you buy the car with the RNS510 installed, So ask them where your is , just say they must of over looked sending you your disc ,

Everyone here knows? Really? I didn't realise that DVD was supposed to be standard issue. RNS came factory installed - i was told the maps were installed at the factory too. I actually had to convince my dealer to install the V3 maps for me....

So I took it in and they replaced the entire unit. Warranty job, so free of charge. Everything works well, except - the new unit seems quieter than before. I usually had the audio level at around 20% for a comfortable listening volume. Now it needs to be at nearly 60%! The first 10% of audio level is virtually silent.

I was wondering if there was a way to specify the RNS-510 base output levels? (hopefully via the system menu). Ive had a dig thru but can't find anything there.

Dont really want to make another trip back to the VW service centre....

There is a few settings in vagcom that might help.
I did notice a "Loudness" setting the other day, mine was set to 'on'.

              Thanks IN2VWS

Unfortunately I can't access that setting by holding setup (as i dont have VCDS). Probably got a version of the firmware that doesn't allow it. Looks like i will need to take it back to the dealer to switch the loudness on... Bah!

              cheers

My "holding the setup button" thing didn't work either. Had to switch that on with VCDS.

These are the screens you can access from the sound setup menu screen.

ok now this is getting really annoying... After replacing the unit 3 months ago the thing has decided to fail again. Same problem - can't change the language from German back to English and the RVC is not working. For some reason Audio is working now though.

2 units in 3 months - sounds like it isn't the unit itself. Another trip back to the VW service centre at Artarmon. Sigh....

Seems like VW have still a way to go addressing their quality issues. I was hoping they had improved.

Can't help with the language thing,

But I installed a rvc and it also just wouldn't show up on the RNS screen.

Got into the secret menu which has an indicator there to tell if the RNS knows it is in reverse or not. Turns out it didn't.

A few guides online said that the canbus would need to be replaced, but I just tried upgrading my firmware from 2760 to 3810 and it fixed everything!

So it might just need a firmware reinstall or upgrade.

                      ..
needs to be recoded with VCDS as settings set for line out (to connect to amp/dynaudio) rather than speaker out.

Thanks guys - i dont have access to VAGS so I'm not sure about enabling that secret menu. Am fairly computer savvy but am a bit hesitant to start updating firmware versions quite yet.

Will take it back in and mention the VCDS settings to the service centre (who said there was nothing wrong - they said the new RNS units are quieter).

The thing is all this was working fine a few days ago. Do these units occasionally "reset" themselves and revert to default settings (ie german, no cam installed, no interface with MFD)?

Replacing the entire unit seems extreme - which is what the service centre did the last time this failed.

Thanks again for all the advice.

                          So.

They ended up replacing the entire unit. They tried everything - reinstalling firmware didnt help. Could have been 2 faulty RNS-510s. The faulty one has been sent back to VW for investigation.

                          Auf Wiedersehen!
