  • Anyone retrofitted the MDI?

I found an installation kit fairly cheap ($155 + PH) that goes into the arm rest. Was wondering how you connect it back to the head unit (what has to be pulled apart, etc).

Ideally I'd prefer the version that goes in the glovebox, if for no other reason my armest is the beige colour, and having a black MDI inside might not look fantastic - not sure, so if anyone has spotted one of those for <$320 please do let me know.

I've seen the relevant page at MyGTI.com - but those attached installation instructions are a tad hard to read. Searching here proved fruitless as well (I think it might've ignore the term 'MDI' - so I got a bunch of random threads about installing stuff).

Inside my armrest cubby hole near the bottom I have the 3.5mm audio jack (some cars have the jack on the outside of the compartment I've noticed).

    TIA

It should be simple, hardest bit will be routing the cables where you want them (ie, center console will be a bastard)... post the link to the kit and I'll take a look and tell you if it looks like what I remember my factory one looked like in terms of plugs, etc

I wonder if I could remove the plug from the armrest box thing and just route it where-ever I want (ie the glovebox) and have it sortof-of loose (tie or tape it somewhere).

The pics are a bit fuzzy (maybe that's just my eyes) but it certainly looks like the right sort of harness... it's got the full MDI for the armrest thing too, so if you wanted to fit it in the glovebox, you might need a dremel/sharp knife to cut it to the required size.

I was told by a reputable (non VW) dealer, that the full kit can have the "smarts" part of the MDI removed from the armrest box thing and installed in the top corner of the glovebox - there is a small panel up there where it is fitted on the newer golf's. This is what I was told anyway...

I've just bought the USB adapter for $29 and hopefully will win an auction for the rest of it tomorrow (got a snipe setup so I should win it) and I'll either place it in the glovebox or somewhere on the driver-side of the car - perhaps in the little storage compartment right of the steering wheel where my sunnies are.

                Hey Ryan,

How did you go with your retrofit MDI or has it not arrived?
Did you buy the Kufatec harness as well ?
