  • RCD510 - IPhone with IOS 4.2

I just upgraded my Iphone 3GS to IOS 4.2 and it won't play music through the RCD510.
I am able to browse all the songs, the song track will appear on the screen however when i press play nothing happens.

While I was testing I received a phone call with the Iphone plugged in. Audio from the phone ringing came through the speakers.

Anybody else out there have the same problem with IOS 4.2?

I've had a problem with the iphone4 on 4.1 when sometimes after turning on the car with the iphone already plugged in, the song bar scrolls across like its playing but i hear nothing. So I uncouple the phone from the lead and plug it back in, works then.
Bit odd, but nothing that annoying.

LOL it just came out today, why would you be in a hurry to upgrade to something that has no benefit?

I know I shouldn't bite but 4.2 mainly I downloaded it for the security fixes. The flaw where anyone can break your pin and get access to your phone, photos and SMS was enough for me to update.

That and when I plugged it in this morning it told me I could upgrade, I had the time so I did.

I'm the same, I always update regardless. I'm wondering how long would VW normally take to come around with an update to the RCD510.

Why should VW come out with any update?

There are standards/specifications out there for bluetooth, usb and so forth that if manufacturers adhere to there will be no problems. Apple however seem to do whatever they like and release their upgrades with limited testing knowing that there are compatibility issues.

Apple also publish their own specifications for connecting to the iphone/ipod which manufacturers of equipment like car interfaces, clock radios and so forth follow but once again Apple seem willing to alter these specifications to suit themselves at the time. Now they might bring out a minor patch to fix or you might have to wait to get a version upgrade but ultimately the problem is with Apple and their inability to produce a consistent product.

This is further compounded by different hardware versions of the iphone/ipods where you might have only a few versions that don't work whereas 90%+ will operate with the new firmware version.

VW won't release a firmware upgrade for the headunit but may produce a workaround for the MDI but of course by the time they do this Apple may have released a fix for the problem. The MDI update will take time to come through to Australia as well.

In other words don't expect a speedy resolution to the problem and it's going to be pointless raising this with the dealer when you need to raise it with Apple but expect to be fobbed off in the traditional Apple style.

In this instance I thought it was quite clear that I thought the IOS4.2 stopped it working.

I can now happily say however that it wasn't IOS4.2 as such, it was the upgrade process that didn't complete wholly. It seems I still needed to validate the Iphone which I wasn't able to do when initially upgrading. Once I got to work I plugged it in and ITunes went online to validate.

Suffice to say that the validation worked and afterwards the MDI was able to read the music off the IPhone.

While we are bagging Apple (which I will do anytime of day), isn't it nice that your device has to connect to Apples server and do little checks just to let you play your music.

Yet another reason to avoid the iphone, absolutely ridiculous that you have to reactivate your phone after a software update, link it to an itunes account and on top of this you have to use a valid sim.

Very nice of Apple to allow you to do that.

I have MDI, RNS510 and 9W7 Bluetooth with an iPhone 4 running iOS 4.2

I will test out this tomorrow and post my findings.

I had a call on bluetooth on the way home tonight, so I know that is working perfectly without any issues. But Music I am not too sure about.
