  • Need Help! RE: Sat Nav Options

Can someone please explain to me in simple terms the different factory sat nav options VW provide that will fit in a MKV Golf, and if one is better than another, plus any notable features.

I have done some reading but am now confused as to what is what (too many letters & numbers).

    Any help is highly appreciated.

There is a MFD2 or something I think it is called, which is the old model. Not very featured and I've never really seen one for sale.

The only genuine VW option would be the RNS-510 available on eBay and sometimes for sale in the forums (I think there is one for sale atm). Built in HDD for maps and music, full integration with the MFD and reasonable quality of the screen, etc.

There are several aftermarket options, which I'm unsure of. More features usually - notably bluetooth and ipod input usually inc, but some features are lacking in quality or not compatible with the cars (MFD usually no longer works).

the only factory option is the RNS 510.

There are many Chinese clones floating around on Ebay (wd6050, AS7608 etc) that some have found to be ok for the money. If you go for a clone have a good read through the issues raised with these units on the MkV forum (battery drain, poor screens performance in sunlight etc).

Zenec have a range of nav options availalbe that include extra funcitonality and integrate with the car in the same way the OEM unit's do.
The ZE-NC2010 should be compatible with a MkV Golf.

Might need to look into whether a CANbus gateway is required for your golf (battery drain issue) if looking at the RNS510 (and as I understand it a few of the others too). If you have an RCD310 it shoudl be OK. No guarantees though...
TeamV - are you running a Zenec unit? Interested in what they offer, looks good, but I'm worried it will suffer the same issue as upgrading to the RNS or RCD510 requiring the gateway upgrade.

I had the Zenec unit in the car but the significant other prefered the aesthetics of the RNS510.
It integrates with the MFD through an included canbus connection and provides MDI and blutooth as part of the system.
The 2010 map updates have been released and you can also source 3d mapping for the system.

Worth a look if you are interested in a nav system that works with VW models but don't want to fork out for the RNS510 and the yearly $$$ for map updates.

Hmmmm, did not think of that. How much is the yearly update?

                Only some trouble.

Just need to decide what would be easier, having an RNS-510 installed, or selecting music on an iPOD while driving at highway speeds.

Not sure really, mine came with V3 maps.

You can get the map dvd on ebay for $150 so you can be sure the dealer would charge more than that.

Will leave that up to you

You should add an ipod cable but would recommend the MDI interface.
