Which component speakers and sub?

Getting a box shipped from overseas can be pretty pricey, you could get a generic 10 inch box form jb or something for like $60, but chances are it wont be the right size you want or be of great quality. If your keen you could try making a fibreglass one molded to the side of the boot to save a lot of space, or you could whip one up outta some mdf to the exact dimensions you want. Alternatively you could probably have a cabinet maker make one up to your specifications, or get a local car audio shop to either build you one or something. I hear in sydney Fhrx are pretty good and I'm sure they would set you up with something nice Fhrx Studios - Audio / Visual Specialists

Yep I've seen those threads. Its for a Mk5 Golf. I got a quote for around $1000 for a moulded enclosure + sub from FHRX but I would have to leave the car with them and its in south Sydney and I'm from Newcastle, massive hastle and I dont think I want to spend that much anyway.

Wish I could just buy a off the shelf JL Stealthbox for $500 or a underfloor boot one as seen on golfmkv.com. Wierd thing is those pics of under the carpet on Golfmkv.com look totally different to under my boot carpet. I have a GT Sport TDI not a GTI but I would have thought the boot would be the same.

3-ways are better than 2-ways all things being equal, but not usually for the price and speaker location plays a more important part. However the MK5 comes stock with 3-ways so makes sense to run them (albeit not very good locations, 2-ways with door pods would be better but you'd be spending a lot to do that).

Agree Dynamat is overrated and in my R32 i only had a bit behind the midbass. It wont help the tweeters and mids as they are sealed, which is why i'd be careful using tweeters that are too bright particularly when mounted in the stock sails. Also adds a bit of weight if you go too overboard. The VW are built pretty well to start with and some door foam like Tacmat is more what you want to stop the door cards vibrating and moving against other materials.

I would get a 10" stealth sub enclosure made at an audio shop and being quality you can always sell it for a good price later.

OK I might not go to overboard with it then. I dont really want too much weight. I almost bought the Superlite variant but after reading a bit the concensus was that it didnt weigh much less than the normal stuff and you might as well just use less of the standard material.

I would still recommend doing the outer door skins if you have the balls to take them off (assume you have a MK5).

Thinking of getting a Focal SB 27 V1 sub enclosure for $500 at my local store. Looks fairly small and shouldnt be too hard to take out when needed.

with 2 way or 3 way speakers there is always a compromise in sound quality, thats why high end gear generally uses a seperate speaker for the frequency range, they can capatilise on the cone shape and better magnets, and construction. Aftermarket Dynaudio's or Boston pro's are the go, but it's one of those things where you get what you pay for!

Say what? 3-ways do have separate speakers for different frequency ranges. Are you talking about splits?
