  • Waywell WD6050 / Audiosources AS-7608 TV/GPS/DVD/ Buetooth Headunits ?

Im thinking of getting one of these bad boys in my MY07 GTI dsg. What do you guys reckon? Only thing is I have the factory premium sound with the amplifier under the passenger seat. Im also thinking of putting a sub, better speakers and alpine amp with it. Can it be done? Who do you recommend to do this job?

    Links to the units..

Personally if you can do without some of the features of the Waywell unit and can afford to pay a little more, I'd save my money and buy an RNS510, I've had experience with a similar type of head unit (although not a Waywell) and after several reoccurring bugs within the unit, I sold it and bought an RNS510 from overseas. It will Plug and Play and should work perfectly with your existing amp etc.... There was a post recently where it was suspected that a non OEM head unit was causing someone some electrical issues as well, so this would also be something to watch out for. The only thing with the RNS is that you may need to have your CANBUS upgraded or you could suffer the battery drain issue. There are aftermarket Bluetooth kits that are specifically designed to work with the RNS as well, it really depends on how much you can afford, IMHO the RNS510 is the way to go but it will be more expensive initially. Just be sure and do your homework first before settling on an aftermarket unit

My understanding is that the waywell unit does not have low level outputs so unless you are planning on ditching your amplifier the RNS510 is a better way to go. I don't think the amp you have can be altered so you had better research this first.

I've gone through the same motion about purchasing a unit for my R32 and at the end, bought the RNS. I've never looked back since it integrates so well with the car, and you can keep your amplifier as well. The next thing for me is to upgrade the speakers and get a subwoofer and subwoofer amp. Good luck.

I have just received a 7608, for fit upgrading an RCD300 in a Golf Mk5. Ordered from China on Friday and arrived Melbourne Monday!
This is for someone else's car - it will be interesting to see how it goes. I feel like a traitor as I have only recently done the Option B bluetooth upgrade to my own RNS510.
It is worrying that there is no technical data with the unit like pinouts - but the cost is certainly very attractive given the bluetooth is include.

Will do - but have to wait for a few weeks as I am doing for my son in Sydney. I did the bluetooth recently for my own RNS510 - easy but quite a wiring squeeze!

Right, that's done. Took the two of us a full day, but much of that was taken up with accessing the old unit and wiring the RVC. Neither of us was familiar with pulling apart a Golf! There is no doubt that the AS7608 is a very cost-effective upgrade compared with fitting an RNS 510. My thoughts are...
                PLUSES
                • Very full features at a good price
                • Shipment ex China is very fast indeed
                • Looks good and complements the VW interior
                • Good to have total GPS flexibility – BYO means that one can choose one’s own product, update maps immediately they become available etc. I used IGo even though I am far more familiar with TomTom. Thus on-screen display of GPS speed, camera locations etc is very easy
                • Good CANBUS and MFD integration
                • Good IPod integration
                • Others have reported audio hum problems, I had none
                MINUSES
                • Do not touch with a bargepole unless you are technically competent
                • The bluetooth phonebook transfer is broken. Hangs
                • Zilch technical support. For instance, Audiosources will not provide even a unit rear pinout. They state that the three flying leads should not be used – then state that the fakra should be connected to one…I would have been far more happy to be told each lead function (Regulated? Protected? Load limit?). Don’t use the logic of connecting the RVC to the Camera input – you have to work out the inputs and outputs yourself!
                • User manual is ‘linguistically challenged’ (is that a nice way of putting it?)
                • Rear CANBUS wires are not bus-compliant: I removed the bus wires and replaced twisted
                • Watch the company. They stated in writing that they were including a dual fakra with the unit but only sent a single. When queried they said that they only ever supplied a single. I gave up and just bought elsewhere – worked fine on both AM and FM
                • I could not get the RVC screen grid to move with the steering. I will have play with the VCDS more to see if this can be achieved (the company does not state whether the capability is there)
                • No firmware upgrades as far as I can see….unless you are prepared to remove and replace a factorysupplied surface-mount chip (not for the faint hearted!)

They're all very similar and none are better than the others, they're all unreliable poorly built rubbish. However there is no point trying to educate people of the problems and issues with the units because as can be seen above people ignore any feedback and still purchase them anyway so go ahead and let us know how you get on at regular intervals like install (and all the problems like CAN bus, aerial interfaces etc) and 3 months (when your CAN bus gateway has failed) and 6 months (when your car battery keeps going flat because you have a CAN bus gateway module) and at 9 months (when the dodgy relay setup has caused multiple components in the car to fail) .....

There are numerous threads over at golfmkv (one is listed above) that go into hundreds of pages of people losing their money (head units not being sent back), suffering from flat batteries, having to do relay mods, not having working buttons on wheels, no radio reception, forking out hundreds to send the units back to china, putting up with loud beeps each time you press a button and so on and so forth.

Take a look at the Volkswagen head unit threads and all you see are complaints about what colour to choose for the background and how to get into the setup.

The choice is pretty clear if you're prepared to look at this objectively.

If one of you guys want to buy a Waywell, I've replaced mine with an RNS510. As Maverick stated above they are pretty poorly made and while they have a few extra inclusions and look alright, they have a few issues and zero support/information for repair.
I'm much happier with the RNS, but like I said, if one of you wants to buy it, drop me a line.

Hey mate, I might be interested.

How new is the unit? Do you know if it is a version 4?

                          I'm based in Brisbane.

Haven't quite got the hang of this forum yet, but if you are able to pm me a price or some further details that'd be great.
