  • Alpine VS Focal - Speaker and Amplifier advice

    Hi Guys,

I am looking to upgrade the speakers in my Polo and have narrowed it down to a couple types of speakers.

For the fronts I am trying to choose between:

    Focal Polyglass 6.5-Inch Component

    Alpine Type-X SPX-17REF

    And for the rears:

    Focal Polyglass 6.5-Inch Coaxial

Alpine Type-X SPX-17REF (using the tweeter mounting bridge to turn them into coaxial)

    Alpine Type-R SPR-17C Coaxial

I also figured I would need to go for a amplifier to really make it worth while, however I am not really to sure on this. Any suggestions? I would like high level inputs, along with auto sensing since I am using the stock RCD310 head unit.

I am also open to other suggestions on the speakers.

    Thanks@

Theres other brands out there that give you more for the money, you dont have to pay a premium for the brand name. Looks on some car audio forums man.

I have had just the stock speakers in my Tiguan (no amp) replaced with Focal Polyglass speakers and I am VERY happy, there is a noticeable difference in sound quality. Depends on what you want and the type of music you listen to I think. There is a lot of good technology that goes into Focal drivers but they do have a distinctive sound which to my ears tends to the dry, bright and lean side of reality. The biggest difference has been with the replacement of the stock tweeter in the Tiguan which was really not very good.

Would checking out VW Car Audio and Electronics be one of them?

Maybe have a search in the car audio section and on Mobileelectronics.com.au.

There are other brands to consider like Dynaudio, DLS etc. Crescendo is being hyped up a bit on the net (and is apparently just one guy importing them so not sure how good support would be) and havent heard them myself.

Main thing to know is which ones fit in and what kind of sound you like.

I browse through Mobile Electronics Australia occasionally. Can find some decent deals in the trading part too sometimes.

edit: fail. i thought that was a different forum to the one just mentioned xD

I would also echo the earlier comments and suggest you consdier what other options are out there.

The focal speakers and alpine amps will be good, but you will probably find differences between the brands that you may prefer, particularly at your price point. Personally, I have always found the focals to be a good performing speaker, but have found the tweeter to be a bit shrill and harsh, particularly at loud volume.

I would also consider not bothering with replacing the rear speakers and just running a small sub in the boot. This will field a far better overall result, but would depend on whether you can spare any boot space.

Call the importer and have a chat with him, he's a young italian bloke very genuine and friendly.

The product itself may be ok, it was just the support i was considering as it's one Uni Student importing them apparently, but a lot of products are purchased over the internet these days. A lot of stuff is fairly price driven too these days.

I'd go with some speakers you can audition and decide which ones you like for yourself.

DLS is quite good for the money, but I'll most likely get Dyn's again after having them before, very happy with the sound and know what i'm getting.

I had a concern with my optima battery that i bought of him, i sent him a text on what to do, he called me within 2min and handled it from there.

That's promising, just figured there wouldn't be much stuff in stock and you may have to wait a while when a replacement is sent out to him, and do you get warranty etc.. just seems like you could order the stuff yourself. Good work though, there is a market for it.

Also nowhere to audition or listen to the speakers here so would have to rely on internet recommendations etc...
