  • 2010 RNS 510 with LED display?

I heard and I saw some sellers are selling the 2010 RNS 510 units, with LED display, but I could not find any information about this with Google, however I still think to buy a OEM unit from Ebay is much cheaper and affordable, I rang my dealer to ask them to fit on my coming GTI, seems they agree to do it.
    what do you think?

As with anything off ebay, make sure the seller has a >90% rating and if it looks like a chinese rip off, it probably is.
Try to source the unit from a country that is more likley to be genuine i.e. uk/australia

I know of lots of ebay purchased 510's on the forums and no one has had a big issue yet iirc.

I asked someone in the industry regarding the LED displays

they were suprised to hear that they are available, as in their opinion they were not suitable for in car application. not sure if it ws related to glare or the like.

However, what's the benefit of an LED verses conventional display unit?

Install of the RNS to replace an RCD 510 is dead easy - 10 mins. all you really need other than a torx bit is a vag com cable, or access to someone with one (5 mins)...

      Dealers will be very expensive
More opportunites have been lost from indecision, rather than wrong decision....

        What industry is that?

OLED's (and AMOLED's) are being use in more cars and will be widely used over the coming years because of all the benefits.

VW have a concept car that uses the OLED display for the instrument cluster. OLED's are being trialled for brake lights, interior lighting, display panels on steering wheels, HUD units (but the OLED is either stuck to or built into the glass and so forth.

OLED has many benefits including viewing angles, low power consumption, smaller size etc.

10 minutes with a chainsaw perhaps but realistically if you want to do a proper job without ripping your trim to pieces you should leave 1-2 hours.

The tools you need include a torx bit and a selection of trim removal tools.

The parts you need include a can gateway upgrade (Depending on year of car and firmware version on RNS 510), an antenna adapter and a GPS antenna.

The job includes swapping of some pins if you have a aux in or cd changer, installing the gps antenna, sound deadening any areas that are prone to rattles and so forth.

All of this is detailed on my website.

And dealers won't be expensive, allow an hours labour (not including the CAN gateway) so around $110 including programming.

          umm, in the concreting industry....

Given that the person initiating the post has/is enquiring regarding a 2010 GTI, one would presume he is referring to the change from an RCD to an RNS.

whilst I bow to your knowledge and expertise in the area, I can also speak from experience on such an install.

Given the abovesaid is the case, a Can gateway upgrade is NOT required. Trim removal tools are easily accessible (as most of us were fortunately born with 10 functioning ones) for the MK6 install. As far as antenna adapters etc etc, well presuming he is considering an LED version (ie later model) then said adapter is also not required. Given all of this, one would further deduce that sound deadening material is also not required as you will be using the factory harness to plug into the RNS unit. Just the unit, the security code GPS aerial and the torx drivers. If you really want to splash out, then a couple of cable ties will secure the GPS aerial lead to the factory harness. If he/she so desires, then yes, a VCDS coding can also be done (to achieve dynaudio, skin, RVC, and MFD functions).

There is a wealth of knowledge out there that is easily accessible, and yes, Maverick is responsible for a great chunk of it. For the original poster's application, I suggest he/she does a google search for a you tube video on an RNS install.

Please dont take my thoughts and comments as to be rude, but when I was researching the process, I was led to believe by a few that I was trying to achieve the impossible - leading me to doubt whether it was something that i should just go to a dealer and fork out 3K for... The reality is, it is the simplest, quickest, and easiest audio install I have ever done or seen.... (bear in mind, that is from a RCD510 to an RNS510).

As far as a MK6 GTi goes....as my knowledge is linited to that

              VCDS will allow for:
skin change on the unit (ie, change colours to suit your liking),
Nav directions and compass to be displayed in your white MFD (between tacho and speedo)
Activating your RVC (rear view camera) if fitted
Allowing for Dynaudio/premium sound if fitted

In my case, the LHS steering wheel controls were still functioning as they were prior to the unit change, so there was no need for changing that.

i chose the LCD RNS510 finally, just because i could not find any information related to the LED display, and it costs $1700 AUD, but the LCD one just $1100 from the UK, so i dont think the $600 difference is worth to get.
i asked my dealer, they said probably they can, but have to ask, well, i dont mind to be charged at a reasonable price
