  • Google Phone in a MK6

Mods PLS delete this thread if it is too Off topic.

Here is my Google Nexus One phone setup in my MK6.

Never going to be as neat as your inbuilt NAV units. You have to put up with a single cable running down to the charger in the ashtray. But this arrangement has 2 unique benefits not available elsewhere with iPhones and so on.

    1) Google Navigation with Photo Maps. (note traffic info Top Left and satellite view Bottom Right )
    2) Allows movie video camera to be used when you are driving. (Top Right photo) It takes a damned good move too. I can post an example to youtube if anyone is interested.

Apart form that is does all the usual stuff. Handsfree calls routed via BT to additional speakers and mics in the cradle. I also have the Media Audio streaming to the Aux input jack in the center armrest storage as my MK6 is low spec without any OEM BT.

All works well and Phone is a sinch to dock and undock. In the long run I may move it all over to the Right hand side and mount it up the other way on the dash to hide the cable.

    Sounds pretty awesome mate.

I have a HTC Dream with google maps and nav but i am going aftermarket nav/stereo for integration and so i don't end up with the "i have a navigational unit" ring on the windscreen which seems to promote break-ins.

You would need the charger though, these smart phones just cain the battery.
Even on 10% screen brightness mine goes out after 2.5 days of minimal use.

Yes I agree. You need the charger. The Google cradle has a 2 amp one in fact. So seemingly powering the cradle with its BT and speakers and the smart phone requires plenty of HP.

Plus 1 for the Google phone although I don't use your typical GPS applications.

I'm running trackmaster data logging on a HTC desire. Gave it it's first run on the weekend.

        Trackmaster - Welcome

Same mob does a neat dyno app too.

The Desire was picked up by the eclipse BT headunit in my Bora no problems for streaming Audio and handsfree. Adress book push to HU is working too, no luck so far with SMS notifications to the HU yet (Not that I'm fussed about SMS's)

Hey that is neato. Wonder if they could somehow get part of the trackmaster telemetry to overlay on the video camera. would make for a cool video, fanging around the track with the telemetry overlaid in one corner.

There's a couple of people working on exactly that but I think there's some limitation with Android's on board video editing capabilities.

I'm going to have a play with the data and see what I can do in editing it all together.

              Google phone is pretty neat.

Looks ok but wouldn't it get annoying obscuring your view in the middle of the windscreen? I think the screen and buttons may be a bit small for the car if mounted too far back.

I was testing tomtom on the iPhone and even With the ac adapter and brightness down it would run out of power after 3hrs. Pretty pointless as the program/phone used more power than you could supply it with.

Thanks for posting it logger, I'm in the process of buying a new mobile, since my aging Palm Treo650 will not last too long. I will look at the Google phone.
