Problems using SD card reader on RNS510 unit

Hi all, I've recently been busy trying to get some more music (in the form of my MP3s) onto my car's hard disc drive (RNS510). I thought the easiest way to do this was via SD card.

I initially copied some MP3s on a high capacity 16gb card. The car's SD reader simply failed to read it.

I then copied some MP3s onto a smaller capacity 2gb card. The car's SD reader was able to read it but reported errors. Track number 1 could still be played but I am not able to individually select subsequent tracks via the touchscreen (though it will start playing track 2 etc after finishing the subsequent track!) Very frustrating.

I used an Apple Mac to get the mp3s onto the SD cards (MP3 format NOT apple's lossless format or other format). The music was my own (i.e. not music purchased through itunes).

Has anyone else had these problems? Any known fixes? Does anybody know what the highest capacity card the RNS510 supports?

Is your 16gb an SDHC card? I am not sure if RNS510 supports SDHC but that could be it. 2gb is generally not SDHC.

My RNS510 reads 16gb sdhc although I had to upgrade the firmware for it to do so.

The 2gb should work though... have you actually copied the mp3's to the internal hard drive?

There maybe is an issue with how macs format the card.... although i have no idea on apple tech.

It could be that the Mac has written a hidden file to the drive which is hidden to a Mac but the unit is seeing it and confusing the track listing.

Have you tried to load the MP3's with a cd? If you have the same problem then could be something to do with the mac. I have used an SD 1.0 Gb card and it works fine, copied with windows...

Thanks for all your replies. I finally worked out a "foolproof" way (for me at least) of getting music onto the SD card and then onto the Hard Drive. Here's what I did step by step:

1. I gave up using any SD cards greater than 1.0gb. Indeed I located an old one. SDHC simply didn't work for me despite what the manual may or may not have said about them.
2. I formatted my old humble 1gb SD card on my old windows XP computer (Apple computers can format in MS-DOS format via Disc utility program but I wasn't taking any chances).
3. I then inserted the SD card in my mac (where my music was stored) and copied over the music to my card using finder. I used a different subfolder for each "album".
4. I then carefully ejected the card and placed it into my old windows XP machine.
5. Under my old windows machine, I then proceeded to delete all the hidden files that my mac automatically inserted onto the SD card. These are obvious once you view them on a windows machine. I made sure to visit each subfolder where more hidden junk files were contained. Most of my music contained duplicate junk files.
6. After carefully deleting all hidden/junk files, I was able to successfully insert the SD hard in the RNS510 unit and extract the music onto my hard drive.

Now I love my "easy to use" Mac and my "easy to use" new VW CC but why does it have to be such a pain getting my music from one device to another!

I had no issues loading music onto my RNS using a mac to format the SD card to FAT and leaving the .dstore hidden files so I wouldn't bother with the manky old windows machine

This is with the latest RNS firmware running also

Which firmware? Size of SD card?
