  • importing a refurb rns510?

I havent even taken posession of my skoda yet, and already getting ahead of myself. I couldnt justify spending $2.5k on the satnav option, especially as the decision to get the car instead of the significantly cheaper japanese car i was looking at, started to stretch my budget.

However, I have been looking into getting an imported rns510, either used or refurbed from the eu. If i do, are there any major pitfalls I need to be aware of? Also, how hard is it to find a copy of the AU maps and install them?

Are there any alternatives that offer all the functionality? My car is optioned with an MDI for the bolero stereo, will I be able to use that with anything else?

    thanks in advance.

Not 100% sure if it is a direct replacement for skoda units as i think they use the columbus system.
Also want to make sure you can source maps as the Australian map disc costs around $1100.
I also believe you need to change some coding vbia vag-com for the RNS to work.

Might pay to look on here for a unit as i think there was someone selling their RNS from their new tiguan.

Hope this is of some help.

Further to this, i finally just picked up my Octavia. When i was picking it up, i was speaking to the extras guy, who suggested that if i import a columbus unit from OS, i may have region issues with getting AU maps on it.

so the question is, if i have an au maps dvd from a golf RNS510, will it work in an a columbus rns510, and will it work in an EU import columbuis rns510?

Shouldn't be an issue as the region can be changed and the firmware can be updated.

Also make sure that if you import a unit, that you are aware of customs/duty fees if it is valued at over $1000 AUD

thanks for the very quick answer. Just clarifying if it is the same map disk for a vw golf rns510 as it is for the columbus?

            I don't know if it's the same.
It should be since they would all use Sensis Maps however you would have to check Briskoda or wait for another response to work out if you can use them or not.
