  • RNS 310 satnav in Australia?

Has anyone heard anything about the RNS 310 becoming available down here? Can it be bought as a spare part here?

I saw that VW in the US have announced it as becoming available for MY2011, including on the GTI.

RNS 510 is (IMHO, not trying to start a flame war here) massively overpriced for what you get (compared to and what I'd make use of. I've specced MDI on my GTI and have a big iPod for all my music, so the 30Gb HDD on the RNS 510 is unnecessary and so is the 6 disc stacker on the RCD 510. Given the smaller, lower res screen and no HDD, I wonder how much cheaper the RNS 310 is over the bigger unit.

Some good clips on youtube showing the fast interface and integration with the MFA+ and MDI on a Golf 6 GTI.

    YouTube - Golf 6 RNS 310 and
    YouTube - Golf 6 GTI Dynaudio RNS310 MFA+

If anyone's got any info on availability down here, I'd like to hear.

Don't all jump in at once now...

I take it that no one is even interested in this unit?

Hey Dylan, I've landed for $1k a refurb RNS-510 so in terms of anything between the RCD-510 and the RNS-510 would not the difference in price be negligible?

RNS 310 is the optional sat nav unit on the Polo, the RNS 510 is not an option AFAIK for the Polo range.

The US market is completely different hence why they're offering the RNS 310 as the sat nav unit on the Golfs. The actual cost of the unit to Volkswagen doesn't matter as the unit is positioned not that far from the RNS 510. I'd expect it to be no cheaper than $1000 from spare parts (RNS 510 with maps DVD is $3500 IIRC) and given the limitations of the unit with smaller screen, no hard drive and so forth I don't see the value.

Especially when you can pick up refurbed RNS 510's as mikinoz pointed out for under $1000.

The biggest problem with the RNS 310 is the screen size and interface. I want the biggest screen I can get to minimise time spent with my eyes off the road... sorry I mean off the speedometer when driving. Plus the releases of firmware with new features is very limited, I'm yet to see a single firmware update for the RCD 510 and RNS 310 yet whereas the RNS 510 is having features added all the time.

The RNS 510 IMO is the best head unit on offer from any manufacturer at the moment, it looks classy in the dash and makes use of the space available, the RNS 310 IMO looks like a cheap unit.

          RNS 310 satnav in Australia?

$1k for a refurb RNS510 is awesome value Mick. Can you send me any more info?

Mav, like I mentioned, at $3500, the RNS510 doesn't represent value for me. The HDD is redundant so the fact the 310 doesn't have it and it makes for a lower price is a good thing for me. Of course, at $1k for a refurb, I'd put up with the inconvenience if the surplus HDD...
