I put the Fiscon Basic Plus kit in myself and then when to my VW dealer to have the coding done. They didn't have any problem with this. Works really well with my HTC touch except sms does not work.
I have had both a 1 and a 4. The VW Basic unit was installed by my dealer at delivery, but basically did nothing other than answer calls, not what I was promised. No real interaction at all with the RNS510. The dealer then installed the VW Premium.
I am about to rip it out and replace it with a Fiscon Basic Plus (3 above). I have spent 3 months now trying every trick I could find to get the VW Premium to work with exactly the same phone as you, a HTC Touch Diamond 2. Bottom line is it doesn't! My profession is IT, I know how these things work ... and this combination just doesn't!
It will also certainly not work with the iPhone. The VW Premium unit requires the phone to support RSAP, iPhones don't and the HTC implementation is broken on the Touch Diamond 2 at least, if not on all WM6.5 phones.
I am pretty certain the Fiscon is going to work fine, it certainly has been reported as doing so by other Touch Diamond 2 owners.
If you are desperate to try the VW Premium reply to this thread, you can have mine for $600 and I'll freight it to you for nothing!
I know that this will really give you the sh!+s, but I have a Touch Diamond 2 working perfectly with my VW Premium Bluetooth kit. I am with Telstra using a Next G SIM Card (and yes, I only get a GSM signal)
May I make a suggestion. I don't know which provider you are with, but go to your local Telco shop and tell them your SIM card has failed and get a brand new replacement SIM Card. Then try again to get the phone working. I have twice found now that a new SIM card somehow seems to get over the old connecting/disconnecting/connecting cycle.
Hope this helps.

Your first sentence certainly sums it up! I did even try another SIM without any success ... along with versions 6.1 and 6.5 of Windows Mobile and probably 5 diferent ROMS. Pleased yours works ... not happy mine doesn't.
At the end of the day, this RSAP stuff is a bit restrictive for me ... when I buy a new phone I want to choose based on its functions and not be limited to whether it is going to work with my car kit.
The only reason I have stuck with the Premium BT is for the ability to read SMS messages. I know the Fiscon system has the SMS facility, and can even send a limited number of pre programmed replies, but I have never seen any BT system that can work with the Windows Mobile phone SMS system. My BMW system worked perfectly getting an SMS from my Nokia, but never with any WM phone. If anyone out there can tell me differently I'll certainly consider a change. Does the Skoda 729 system or Fiscon system work with the WM SMS system?
Should be watching the road, SMS is a pretty big distraction and takes time to type it.
You can't type with the system, it's read only. However, your point is valid. There's a time and place. If I'm on the freeway in light traffic I'll read it, but not during the morning commute. Embarrasing to run up someone's bum reading an SMS, to say the least.

Doesn't hurt having a quick look if you are sitting in traffic that's moving or at the lights, but the nature of SMS I that it usually isn't urgent otherwise people would call. Just think the replies can wait till you're not busy..
Decision made, the VW Premium unit is being swapped for a Fiscon Basic Plus on Friday 26/3. VW unit is definitely for sale. Happy to freight it anywhere in Australia. I guess I have 2 choices here ... either leave the thing sitting in a box in the shed or take any reasonable offer for it. Anybody interested at all?
