More bass gain from Box

Hi all, im after a bit of info.

I have a dual 4ohm 1200W max Pioneer champion series subwoofer.
I have it running off a 250W RMS BOSS audio mono block.

Now my question would be this. I have been told and have witnessed how changing the box can increase MASSIVE bass. How can i acheive this and where can i get the info on the dimensions on what size the box would be.

Would a bigger and better designed box put out more bass and would it be alot? At the moment My friend at JB HIFI has hooked me up with a once off amp that i have on LAY BY. This amp is enough to run 2-3 subs at once although is costly.

Would i be better of building/buying a box to increase bass, or just get this AMP and add another Champion series pioneer sub. I think the design for this sub is quite bad. PLEASE HELP as i need the info as soon as possible to make a desicion.

2. Never quote "max" power ratings.

What Amp is your friend setting you up with?? is it 1 or 2 ohm stable ???

is the box you have now sealed or ported???

How much cash do you have to spare???

The box is the most important part of a system, it can make a huge difference.

Also what car is it in ??

I do beleive it is 1 ohm stable. he said to me its really powerfull and can handle 2 subs with ease. thats costign me $400 with almost half price discount.

The box i have is identical to the pic and is sealed not ported. i dotn have much to spend, but if i can use the the money for the amp to make a new BOX instead, id rather do that. im hoping the box would be a cheaper way and just as good.

its in a golf MK1 by the way. would the box make a big difference, as i LOVE bass.

Any amp can run multiple subs so long as they are wired correctly.

go ported, try 1.7 cubes at 35 hz,

it wont be crazy difference, but you should gain a little.

If your still not happy then its time to treat yourself to some decent gear .

Also if the amp is 1 ohm stable, you will only be using half of its potential with a single dual 4 ohm wooofer... as it can only be wired to 2 or 8 ohms.

Ported / Vented designs can work well with a matched driver (sub).

Personally, Ported and vented normally end up having sweet spots and crap points. I have a book on speaker enclosure design and built a couple of boxes for a previous car.

A bigger box will likely extend lower.

Boss is a cheap Strathfield / Ebay brand, if you want power, don't look at the numbers. I had a Eclipse 200W amp running 2 15" subs in a sealed box. I have permenant damage to my left ear.

A quality amp is going to give you a better sound and more power. If the box is too restrictive, the power will be lost. If you build a box, lots of bracing, make it an odd shape and stuff it with something (eg pillow).

Personally, see how the amp upgrade goes (see if your lights dim when the bass kicks in) if you are still unsatisfied, sell your box/sub combo and buy a bigger one second hand (save yourself a lot).

Have you ever opened up a speaker box and seen the lining? You can buy the special stuff, but honestly a pillow isn't bad for a buget build.

The pillow is to help reduce the resonances in the box. The idea of a quality speaker box (sub or midbass) is to stop the external surfaces from flexing. If they flex, they act as speakers themselves, then you have a myriad of soundwaves crashing around and you get a lot of unwanted phase issues.

In an infinite baffle design, there is no box, the rear cycle is thrown into a large space (like a wall cavity, attic or unused swimming pool [yes it was overkill]) The point of the box is to stop the unwanted noise from the rear of the speaker diaphram from going into your listening environment. A larger box generally will allow the speaker to move more freely, allowing it to travel further and produce lower frequencies louder.

Here is a photo from Bower and Wilkins in one of their production warehouses. Even though the largest driver is only about 6"-8", their is a LOT of bracing and you can see the little black sections which are vaguely similar to felt or a rubber compound. They help absorb reflections in the box.



So why a port or vent?

Ports and vents use the sound from the rear of the speaker to produce a tuned sound to work with the sound from the driver. A basic summary is to say the port handles the lower frequencies and the driver handles the higher frequencies. If designed properly, it can sound great, if not, you get uneven bass at different frequencies, phase issues and even moving your head a little in a car can have a different sound.

I like big drivers and sealed boxes, you have a much better chance at getting a good sound if you are building your own setup.

With a $100 woofer you wont notice the difference padded or not, in fact alot of the TOP SQ cars dont have it. dacron is comonly used and yeilds almost no results.

Car audio is a completely different game to a home entertainment setup or rock concert...

A pillow will do nothing except chnage the internal volume of the enclosure.

I know all about enclosure design / ports / 4th order /bandpass /etc /etc designs.

Sorry if it seems like im having a go at you, im not, im just pointing out that putting a pillow in a sub box pointless.

So, from what i have read, it would be better to upgrade the Amp, aswell as perhaps a better box?

Im unsure if my Sub is good or not. I have been told its really good and it seams to work pretty good. I have decided to get the Amp anyway and ill see how that goes. but at the end of the day i would like to build a box for 2 12" subs.

i just need all the info i can on how to do it.
any other opinions on what can be done. thanks for all the help already. its helped steer me in the right way

Im pretty possitive its 1ohm stable. my friend has the exact same amp and ill get the info off him. does it matter ohm the amp is stable with for the box??

but oce again, im pretty sure its 1 ohm.

nope,

get another dual 4 ohm pioneer wooofer,

build a custom sub box, go 3.2 cubes at 35hz.

wire the woofer to 1 ohm, and enjoy
