Thanks Swallowtail, particularly for the clarification about firmware versus map data.

btw, this may be a bit off topic as it's not directly 'Maps Price' related but may still be useful or semi-relevant. Question: should I then get (from the dealer) two disks, i.e. one for the firmware and then one for the actual Sat. Nav. map data and what are (if applicable) the version numbers for these two pieces of software, and what would they cost (approx)? If you know the answers, can you either respond on this thread or direct me to the relevant post / website. Thanks very much for your help. Even though I'm a semi-expert on home personal computers etc, I am very new to non-PC related electronics such as the RNS510, ergo never heard of terms like VAGCOM, firmware, etc..

    I appreciate your input.

No, only one disc - for the maps. Part number on mine is 7L6 051 859 BA. To buy it is over $1000...

The dealer should provide free firmware upgrades?

Firmware upgrades are on Mav's site.

Firmware upgrade can be done by the dealer yes... they may charge for some time, but the upgrade is free.

My question is slightly off topic

Swallowtail, just briefly as I don't want to stray from the "Map Prices" topic, seeing as I didn't get any map disks with my new car and the dealer only installed Map Version 1, there may be a good chance that my RNS510 firmware is also very old!?! I have no disks (firmware or map) and do not have access to any other software or hardware tools, so how would I check the version of my RNS510 firmware? Message me or reply here if known. Thanks.

Very interesting when you consider upgrades that Ford, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mitsubishi. Subaru Factory inbuilt navv amongst others are available direct via Whereis in Australia for $295 retail

Means some $900 retail worth of improvement added by the Germans.
You know you are getting old when you cancel your order for a 3.6 CC and buy an Icelandic Gray TDI CC instead.

How much are black DVD's and postage these days.. .

I doubt many people could or would keep handing over $1200 to the dealer everytime a new map release is out..

                  I have an idea.
                  • If Volkswagen Australia set the price of map data to a more realistic level, like other Sat Nav data out on the market, then, not only would we all be happier, but we would also all actually purchase (i.e. hand over the cash!) the new up-to-date data. My guess is, as the data is very over-priced, let's say they sell 10 disks at $1,000 a pop, so they make $10,000. BUT, if they sold the disks at (say) $100 a pop, then (correct me if I'm wrong) most RNS510 owners would periodically pay the fee for a registered disk which they actually get to keep and feel good about, hence they'd make even more money AND make their customers very happy... If only VWA (or whom ever) just priced the data better.

                  The we'd all be happy
