I raised the price of the map DVD for the RNS510 with VW Australia (it is currently about $1200). They advise me that they have to purchase the disc from VW in Germany, and that the high cost comes from Germany, and is not margin placed on the item from VW AU.
And they wonder why people are tempted to do the wrong thing.......
You could buy a new Tom Tom GPS Unit when new maps are released each time for approx $350.....
I’ve just double checked with my manager who has confirmed that there is no charge when we update the Satellite Navigation in your vehicle and this is uploaded in your car once a year.
All I can say is wow... because by my understanding what he is saying that he will do is illegal.
When you buy an RNS510 in a new car from VW Australia, they provide you with a license to use a set of maps. The current maps come on a DVD, Version 2.
That DVD comes with an End User License Agreement (EULA) that it is for a single install. The license is also NOT a maintained license - it is a perpetual license for that specific version.
Thus the only way that you can get a legal right to use the maps is if you have the genuine DVD. So when they upgrade to Version 3 (which is due out very soon I believe), the only way you can get a legal license to use it is if you get a DVD with it on... a dealer loading the maps onto an RNS510 without supplying the disk is illegal - in breach of the EULA. And the only way he can get a DVD to give you is if he buys it from VW Australia - at a cost of about $1000...
Whilst part of me doesn't want to take away these "free upgrades" from anyone, I would far rather see the dealers doing the right thing, and doing it consistently. I don't think anyone illegally loading nav DVDs are doing anyone any favours really... it's stuff like that that increases the prices of software etc for those that do pay for it.
Where do you get the maps from for the Zenec? Legally I mean...
I beleive they require subscription to maps2go or something similar.
It's on their website, however it uses igo8 software so maps can be sourced from anywhere when you google it.
Hopefully i will be able to give a review of the unit in 6 months when i get it for the car.
$1200 is too expensive for maps if they are only current for a year or two. Are people meant to keep handing over that kind of money each year for upgrades

I wouldn't be arguing If you paid full price for Sat Nav at the dealers (vs factory fit) then its reasonable to expect the maps. Not sure about upgrades.
I bet every chinese knock off supplied with IGO 8 or Tomtom isn't a genuine version.

Absolutely - you are entitled to the maps included in the price. But from my understanding of the maps license - upgrades are not included...
Well, I recently took delivery of my new Tigga and I also opted for the RNS510. I asked for the DVD but they refused to give it to me. When I questioned this with VW Australia, they were confused as to why they didn't give me the DVD. I was told that these DVDs are available for around $90 in Australia. VW Australia have now forced my dealer to supply me with a new DVD. I should receive it any day now.
As for updates, I am not getting any useful information from anyone. Neither the dealer nor the service manager was able to tell me how and when I would be informed of any updates to the firmware or maps. This is probably the last time I will opt for the RNS 510. Apart from the convenience of having the maps available to you at a press of a button, alot of the features that this unit is capable of aren't available in this country anyway. My 2 cents.
Swallowtail is spot on about the licence agreement. I suspect those dealers that are happy to do the upgrade for free are the same dealers (like mine) that didnt supply a genuine disk in the first place.
When VWA is trying to justify $1200 and the margins to the dealers are so small its no wonder people break the rules.
I am more than happy to pay for a fair deal but when any car manufacturer insists on blatant profiteering and using any sort of trying to justify $1200 for a map upgrade they get all they deserve.
Being rogered over this stuff makes my blood boil!
Sounds like its time for a protest letter with signatures of forum people about getting this sorted! Anyone interested?

I know this last post was made a few months ago (late 2009), however I don't think much has changed since regarding the RNS510 disk / purchase / upgrade issue . I think I'm in the same boat as many out there. I just purchased a new car, but with NO DISKS. It is a bit of a struggle with dealer to work out why, some explanation about Version 2 disks being corrupted hence the dealer uninstalled Version 2 (which came with the new car from VW) and re-installed Version 1 which I understand is circa 2007!. I've asked the dealer for the disks but apparently the dealer only has one copy of Version 1. So I've asked again, specifying it's my right to have the disks. I think they will comply but it would be better if I didn’t have to fight for it.
Anyway, back to the topic of this thread (i.e. RNS510 Maps Price). I may have some good news (well, for me anyway). I have been told by the dealer that I will get Version 3 free of change, seeing as I only just purchased my car and only have Version 1. This is a dealer promise, regardless of whether or not VW Australia decide to charge for Version 3 or not..
Finally, as for the difference between firmware and map data, etc.., I'm not sure what this means. If there is a difference, does that mean I may only get part of something?!?
Finally, I wish Volkswagen Australia would have a section on their website with ALL RNS510 DETAILS, as it would save us all a lot of grief trying to work out what is what!! Then again, if life were perfect then we wouldn’t need forums like this.
Thanks for the post Mk6_Golf... frustrating hey? If you bought the RNS510 in a new vehicle here in Australia, then you are entitled to receive the map disc. If they have loaded the maps and NOT given you the disc then they (the dealer) have breached the maps' license conditions. If you have just bought your car then you are entitled to V2 maps installed, and the disc to go with it.
The firmware is the software that the RNS510 uses to operate - the equivalent of Windows for a PC on your RNS510. Using the maps is like then installing a program like Microsoft Office on the PC - you need a separate license and separate software to install that program. Does that make more sense?
