  • MFD does not display info from the RNS 510

Hi all, i have just updated my RCD 500 and Dension gateway 100 (CAN version) to an RNS 510 and retrofit MDI kit (behind dash). The MDI kit works great (i can connect my ipod and the RNS displays all the information). However, i do not get any information on my MFD ( this is the high line version in my 08 R32), for navigation or Media from the RNS. Does anyone have a similar setup that has experienced this? When i had my Dension setup with my RCD500, my MFD did display all of my IPOD info.

Also, i have a Parrot bluetooth module (non premium model factory fitted by VW) setup with my original Dension and RCD 500 working fine, but with the RNS this does not work. My phone does connect to the bluetooth module, but when i make a call, the sound on the RNS mutes and i cannot hear anything through the speakers. As i understood it this should have been plug and play. Also, if i hit the call button on the steering wheel, this just mutes the RNS. it would be good to get this working again, especially with the new road rules!!

    thanks for you help.

One other thing i have remembered, when i was doing the MDI installation and removed the +voltage and the canbus connectors from the quadlock, they accidentally touched and there was a spark. Does any one know if this is fused on the can bus line? My MFD is still working fine (except any info from the RNS 510... Radio station, nav turns etc). The RNS also works fine.

Regarding the Parrot Bluetooth, i think that this may be a wiring issue. on the RCD 500 there is an Tel AF +, Tel AF - with a TEL MUTE pin. On the RNS 510 there are many more TEL inputs, and where the TEL MUTE pin was on the RCD 500 this is AMP on the RNS. On the RNS there is a tel Mute pin in a different place, can someone tell me if this should be moved to here?

    thanks

Okay, pulled out the system and moved across the "tel mute" pin and now all is good and working correctly . I connected the RCD 500 and the radio/CD info displays on the MFD so the canbus is still good.... which means that either the RNS is stuffed or this needs to be coded to the car. I would have thought that as the RCD 500 was coded this would be the same, as a lot of people who have swapped these two units have not had an issue. The RNS is from europe (1TO 035 680 B / HW 11 / SW 1120/ manufactured 05.06.09) and could have been coded to a different car, does anyone know if this could be an issue?

Is there anyone in the melbourne area with a vagcom that can help me check this out?

      thanks

I had the same issue to fix you'll need access to vag com:

        Then:

        1. Go to channel 37 - Navigation and go to Byte 7.

Is the BAP enabled or disabled?

If it is currently enabled, please disable it.
If it is already disabled, kindly enable it.

        2. Reboot your RNS510

And it should work (well at least it did on mine)

thanks for the response. I found out that my unit came out of a MK6 golf, so this would make sense, as the new climatronic uses BAP and does not seem that the mk5 golf does.

i will have to get a vag com to check this out.

Unless you want a 1400kg ornament always disconnect the battery before touching the wiring loom. Same with removing connections from the quadlock, do one at a time to avoid putting them back in the wrong spot and take a photo first just in case you're not sure.

The last thing you want is a RNS 510 paperweight which has occurred before to a forum member for mixing power with the CAN bus.

Would this be the same if you were to install the AVC9000-1 unit?
I've tried to install the AVC9000-1 into a new MY10 octavia RS and the unit just blinks. The installer has put it down to anything Mk6 the units don't work.

No, this is only for OEM head units. If the AVC9000 just blinks it sounds like the CAN bus interface is not working on the AVC9000. You could possibly connect it up without the CAN bus interface but it's not worth it. I'd sell it or toss it in the trash and get a Skoda headunit.

                    Hi,

I've been looking at getting a RNS510 from Europe also. Did you get yours from the guy who's selling them on eBay out of Romania? Keen to hear from you.

                      Hey Silverstreak,

If you're interested I have just purchased a second RNS510 (for my sons' Golf) from an eBay seller in Lithuania, excellent seller, quick shipping and the unit looks and works a treat. Here's a link to his store - http://cgi.ebay.com.au/VW-NAVIGATION...mZ200423791965

                      Cheers

Hi guys, I've had a similar problem with the Columbus system in the Skoda (same as the RNS510) communicating with the MFD - it was displaying the navigation info and audio info fine, then for no reason whatsoever, started displaying "Skoda Navigation" and not showing the nav or audio info. The car's been looked at twice by the service department, and the verdict is a new Columbus unit needs to be installed, about a 3 week wait from Europe.

                        Thank god for warranty....
