just go and have a look at a few audio shops (and ask questions) and get a basic idea first, you'll find out more than asking a few one line questions on here (with no budget)..
$2-3k may be a nice reasonable budget, no point going too overboard with car (audio like i did).

umm ill just throw my 2 cents in... from my experience, putting 6x9's in and a sub generally screws with the quality of your bass from the sub as 6x9's are primarily a bass speaker (just my opinion once again).
if it were me doing it, id go with a 6.5" component, gives you the nice high end sound and lets the sub handle the bass without being distorted by the speakers also trying to push out bass.
MY personal fav brands are Rockford Fosgate for speakers and subs (expensive) or alpine speakers and JL Audio for subs... Can't really go wrong with any 3 of them even with the cheap stuff.
Hope that helped2009 (MY10) Passat R36

Yeah mate a lot of the above is right.
You want a good quality headunit and splits (Alpine or eclipse for HU and focal or JBL for splits), 6x9's are ok but if you're going to run a sub, then after a while you'll notice a difference in sound quality from sub to 6x9's.
From experience, the mk4 standard speakers are pretty good, so you could look at replacing the fronts and simply fade out the rears a little (if you don't have many people in the back that is).
That way you can crank your sub and have some great sound without paying for unnecessary rears. a 15 inch sub is probably too big also for a golf, go with either a 12 or 2 10's, make sure you go DVC for a single 12, sounds tough!
goodluck with it mate, and remember spend the money the first time otherwise you'll be buyin it twice1979 Mk1 Golf GTi

depends how much room you want.
you don't have to run 2 amps for the subs just get a higher output single (can get some good second hand ones) monoblock amp. Seriously mate, you'd probably really only want to go a single 12 with dual voice coil because anything else just limits what you can fit in your boot. Trust me it's a pain the arse taking them out all the time to go to the beach for example.
I'd probably look at running another amp for the 4 splits, but make sure you go more than 4x50w otherwise there's no point, that's basically headunit power. Also check out the rated input/output for your speakers and pick your amp based on that.1979 Mk1 Golf GTi

So many brand names can be thrown at you, and around the place, it's unbelievable.
I am a Car Audio Distributor for 5-6 brands, and to be honest, I don't want to confuse anyone by throwing any of these brands names out there. We have selected our brands from sheer knowledge of the technologies, quality and customer satisfaction by listening to the products.
The best advise is to go to your local (experienced) independent car audio dealer and have a listen to some speakers yourself. Most, if not all good car audio stores will have a decent sound board or have onsite demostration vehicles to listen.to. Check the options and the only way to get a good deal with any specialised car audio store is face to face.
Support of local industries is important. You are getting 100% backed warranties from local brands too, and you are getting the best advise from trained professionals.
You will always find what sounds great to you may sound garbage to someone else. Car Audio is all about personal preference. The settings on my sound system are always changed once my wife jumps into the car !!
If you dont have any good local car audio dealers, this is always a great place to start to really get a feel of what good quality systems are made up of: CLICK HERE > FHRX Studios - What SYSTEM ??MK6 Golf GTI ///Adidas | 9N Polo GTI | 96 Seat Ibiza 8v GTI

Use this list, its a bit ruff but it gives a basic idea of whats good:
In this game you have to pay to play. Knowledge and money is key. Ive seen people pay $6000 for systems that could have been got for half that.
If you go to JB they will charge you $700 for a pair of splits that you can ship in from the US for $250 including postage.
Knowing what to buy and where to buy is very important.
Asking for advise in this forum isnt realy going to help you much, visit some audio forums and have a look through some thread there. You will see most people dont even touch JL and Alpine.
If you want a good quality system you will also need to consider spending a fair bit just on cables alone. For example 1/0awg is about $15-$20 per meter and you will need 10m, decent speaker cable is about $5 per meter and you will need about 20-40meters, i got 30m for my mk1. A second performance battery will set you back 350-400. Voltage meter, fuses, fuse holders, dizzy blocks, terminals, rca's, bits and bobs will all set you back another 200 easy. So on RRP youll spend about 1k just on that and you havnt got to the speakers and amps yet haha.
Thats would be your foundation and a very solid one at that, it would be ready to run 2000rms. Any more than that and i would recomend a biger alt or another performance battery. You dont have to go that far though.
Give us a ball park figure of how much you want to spend so we know what you want to play with.MK1 GLS 3door

www.mobileelectronics.com.au is also a great place to start, the guys on there are pretty helpful and would enjoy helping in gear selection.

A lot of the US guys have them on the golfmkv site, and organise group buys over there for 300-400. I think they are still pretty expensive over here for what they are.
