  • Bluetooth Kit Mono / Stereo Cable

OK, I have just received my new bluetooth kit... as I already knew, the harness and cabling is only setup for mono sound from the bluetooth to the stereo. Not a problem for phone conversations obviously, but as the kit supports A2DP, it would be kinda nice to be able to have that in stereo.

The plug on the bluetooth kit is like this:

From left to right, that is:

Power +ve and -ve red and black, audio out (blue and green), microphone in (clear and open), and CANBUS (orange and brown).

Those are connected to the RNS510 wiring harness - power and canbus are spliced into the respective lines, and the audio goes into Pins 6 and 12 on the RNS510's plug 3 (see http://www.my-gti.com/529/volkswagen...in-assignments) - i.e. connected to Telephone audio input signal right, negative and positive. At the moment the mic cable goes off to the mic, but I will rewire that to the RNS510's Mic Out pins (and the Mic itself will be wired into the RNS510's Mic In, to give voice control).

The RNS510 can accept stereo telephone in, but I need to know which pins are Telephone out Left on the bluetooth unit.

    Anyone have any ideas?

What I have found so far is this:

    12v 1
    Ground 2
    Audio out + 8
    Audio out - 9
    Mic in + 11
    Mic in - 12
    Data Link Connector 15
    Mute 16
    Can High 17
    Can Low 18

Now this from a 2007 version. Only problem is that is back when they were mono output only... so doesn't help much with the stereo A2DP output option:

      1 V+
      2 V-
      3 Telephone ON
8 Audio LF Signal out +
9 Audio LF Signal Out -
      10 Screening Term 31
      11 Mic in +
      12 Mic in -
      15 K Line
      16 Mute
      17 CAN Hi
      18 Can Lo
37 Switched positive term for phone charging
      39 Term 31 -ve
41 Interface to mob phone Term 30
      42 Mic Out +
      43 Mic out -
      44 Screening Term 31
45 Audio LF Sig input +
46 Audio LF Sig Input -
47 Wakeup lead to phone bracket
49 Serial Tx comms with tele bracket +ve
50 Serial Tx comms with tele bracket -ve
51 Serial Rx comms with tele bracket +ve
52 Serial Rx comms with tele bracket -ve

        Hmm... this is interesting:

Would seem to indicate that maybe it can't do A2DP at all... yet all the ads for the D version on eBay say it does.

Well, no-one appears to ever have got it working with A2DP. General consensus on VWNavi is that NONE of the 729s support A2DP. Anyone out there with a "D" spec unit that has?

All the D sellers on eBay say it does A2DP... seems strange.

            non compliant CAN bus cable!!!!!!!!

You can't have more than 50mm of untwisted cable.

              I don't think I know of anyone with a Rev 'D' unit..

It's nice to get everything working but I personally think A2DP is a gimmic, doesn't sound that good and just wastes your phone battery. Do you really need it if you already got the MDI, sd card & HDD?

That could be something to look out for on ebay, perhaps they aren't as good as Stu's kits.

But it's something cool to show off

Depends on the price you pay, replacing the CAN bus cable isn't all that expensive but 99% of people I'm sure put them in like that and suffer from obscure problems.

I guess as long as you know to twist the cables but most audio shops wouldn't be aware of that i'd say.

I have had an email from Chris at carsystems.pl, he's going to investigate A2DP this next week and get back to me. I may notify him about the CAN bus cable requirement too.

I agree A2DP is not a huge issue, not for me anyway, but some people like using it, and if it can or can't be done it would be good to have a definitive answer.

I'll pull those cables out of the loom and twist them.

Just like trying to twist wires to make a ethernet cable you'll have no chance of getting it right and will always wonder if that obscure problem is caused by the cable

CAN bus repair wire from VW for 10m is around $15 and it has the correct colours etc.

Did you put the conduit over it? I've built all my looms using the cloth tape used on all the looms in the car, much easier to run and looks OEM. You can buy this from the dealer as well, 10m for around $15. I have a huge roll (now small) that I purchased from Kufatec but at 85 euros for delivery I'm seeking a better priced source.

Do you have VW part numbers for the CAN bus cable and the cloth tape?

The cables came with the conduit already installed.

                          From VWNavi:

"To add to the continuing frustration, I just got an email from the tech at my dealer. VW engineering had him try bluetooth audio A2DP on some factory installed BT cars on their lot. And IT WORKED!

The coding, configuration puzzle continues . . .

Another day, another mystery. Oh, VW what have thou done"

                          Still digging.

All you need to do is wire it up on the headunit end for stereo audio and leave the bluetooth end unconnected until the location of the right audio is available as this is easy to access under the seat rather than pulling the headunit out.

If you pop the cover off the bluetooth you should be able to work out where the other audio output is by tracing the current audio out back to it's source (may not be possible but the chances are good). Might need to look up the IC specs and trace it back from there.

I wouldn't mind a few hi res photos of the innards if you do pop yours apart to compare to the model I have.

Good suggestion re running the cabling anyway for a later fix if it comes up.

Not sure that I'm going to be pulling the unit apart though... carsystems have it stickered for their warranty, so I think I wan to to confirm that it works at all before I pull it apart.

Have you got the part numbers for the CAN bus cable and cloth tape?
