Mine is fine, can't complain at all. If anything its due to antenna not being roof mounted but has been excellent 99% of the time unless i'm in very mountainous/heavily treed areas.

Lack of complaints in general is a good indication. Most people with the unit are more than happy.

I've had various other navigation units including phones and this is by far the best i've used.

first maverick no one suggested as you say 'massive widespread problems'. all i said is that the RNS510 seems to be less than 100% reliable!

i purchased directly from a well recommended source in europe and i see nothing wrong with that as many here have done that and rightly so given the prices VGA charges!

i also asked around about the best dealer in sydney to perform the install and it does not make me, or anyone else, feel good when problems arise. in fact i hope you are correct about the dealer and i would be happy to pay $140-160/hour that dealers charge to rectify my RNS issues. can you suggest a good dealer in sydney? if the dealers can't even install an RNS properly well what about more complex problems?

How do you know any GPS is 100% reliable? Perhaps you are expecting too much , or just like to argue like a few others on this site.

Volkspower should have been capable of doing such an easy install.

just check the antenna is in the right place.

There are also heaps of diy to get the head unit out which may save you some $$.

G-rig the only reason i went to a dealer was because i had no means of doing the coding, otherwise the install is a simple 20 min job.

also when you go to a dealer and pay them a huge hourly rate you would assume that they would know where to place the antenna which IMO is the least difficult task. however, thanks for the suggestion and i will take look at the antenna placement!

I'd agree that you'd hope they know how to retro fit an RNS-510 and they should have installed a lot of them unless they send them out to someone like Harding Performance/Volkspower.

Cant you get them to confirm where they mounted it or get them to re install it (can't find a pic but there's a good spot for the antenna behind the HU).

Go back and read what you're written again because this isn't what you've claimed.

              Short memory?

VW offer a warranty for the life of the car warranty, 3 or 6 years so the difference in price really is the support.

Depends on the dealers, the RNS 510 retro fit is something that they haven't been doing for long, nor in large numbers plus it's not something that there is any documentation on from VW as far as antenna placement etc.

It could be something as simple as the antenna is in the wrong place, a faulty antenna, old firmware or some incorrect coding.

Try these guys, they've been doing the installs for a while now and should be able to help out. If it's an intermittent problem with the unit however short of replacing it there isn't much you can do.

So, a quick update, I sent the Jetta back last Sat for what they said would be an upgrade to the RNS510 and to fix a couple of small bubbles with the tint in the rear window that didn't sort itself out after a period of settling in (I've had the jetta for about a month).

I haven't had the chance to take it out to Mundaring to try the satnav, maybe this weekend.

But, damn the dealership sucks so bad. First, due to work, I thought it would be fine to leave it there Sat morn till Wed evening to get these things fixed - a 1 day job i was told. On wed at 4.58pm, I get a call saying they hadn't done it. Wth. Could I please pick it up on Thurs? I said I had to work, so we agreed they would deliver it at 10am.

And, they delivered it 40 minutes late, and it was dirty inside and out. Whatever they did to the tint was obviously still a rush job cos the liquid was still on the tint, and some of it dripped onto the leather seats. The rubber mats front and rear were all dirty and finger marks were left on the sills.. to top it off, they left a nice scratch on the chrome trim of the right rear passenger window! wtf..

pissed. and the contents of the hdd was wiped and they didn't even let me know this would happen.

all this before i've even had a chance to work out whether they've fixed the rns510 yet. sigh.

FJ Steve, yeah. I did speak to the service manager the weekend after. He seemed really busy as it was a Saturday. Didn't say or offer anything about the cleaning, and what looked like some unusual warp/crinkle on the leather - he passed it off as normal for leather - but he said he would order a new chrome trim from Germany to replace the one which was scratched.

Also, I finally managed to take the car out for a drive to Mundaring and the problem with the RNS510 no longer exists.

I asked them what version of the software they upgraded to, but all the service personnel could tell me was their technicians put the CD in, and if it's the latest, it doesn't do anything..if not, it upgrades. (how useless is that!?!)..so if anyone ever has any problems and want to know what version i've got, sorry i don't know.

PM Maverick for details on how to check Firmware/SW versions. Or check his profile, and go to his website...(in his signature)

No worries. I think early on, I already heard that I wasn't able to get in and check without VAGCOM/VCDS. That's why I asked the VW service people - when they were upgrading - to take note and let me know. Just complaining that they didn't do as they were asked. I'll probably have to wait for another occasion when I come into contact with someone with a VAGCOM , and just ask that they check for me. I did see Mav's post on the latest firmware which has traffic speed limits. That feature doesn't seem to be on mine..which would be interesting considering VW just upgraded it to the latest.
