Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.     Hi All,

    My battery has been running down overnight, but seems to charge up okay once it is going. (I can start the car if not left for more than say 12 hours since the last time it was running).

    So I've been through the lengthy task of measuring the stationary current draw (ammeter in series with the positive battery terminal).

    Before the ECU etc. goes to sleep, it's just under 300mA, after the ECU goes to sleep, with all doors and the bonnet, boot shut, key out, nothing running I am recording about 80mA, which seems a little high.

    I measured the voltage drop across all the fuses in every fuse box (even the one under the battery in the engine bay) and used a table to convert the voltage drop to Amps (which can be done due to the known resistance of the fuse). This way I didn't wake the car up by pulling fuses out.

    Interestingly, I found 40mA was being drawn in full sleep mode by the 5A rated Fuse 18 in fuseholder C (this is the fuse under the gearknob, in the bottom fuse box).

    This fuse supplies the following circuits:

    Air conditioning system control unit -J301- 30- Rear fresh air blower switch -E179- – Operating and display unit for rear -Climatronic -E265- Rear blower regulation sender -G463-

    Surely this stuff should be completely switched off when the car is stationary in sleep mode? Does anyone else note a significant draw from this circuit when the car is asleep?

    Tip: should be about 0.7mV to 1mV across the 5A mini fuse (you can measure from the back of the fuse) to calculate to approximately 40mA draw.


    If someone would be so kind as to measure the voltage drop across this fuse in their multivan when it is asleep (wait 15 minutes after switching it off, without opening or closing any doors).

    I'd hugely appreciate it! This will save me pulling out harnesses etc.

    Even if someone could tell me the static draw on their multivan battery is in the normal range of 80mA it would be appreciated!

    Just another way to check this.Remove fuse 18. Check current draw at battery as you have previously done. Should be 80mA minus 40mA.
