OBDII Cable for VCDS help

Hi all,
I'm looking to start using VCDS with my Polo 6r but I'm confused about the required cable.. I found this:

But will that work? Will it allow me to change things such as Alarm Beep etc..
I noticed there is another type of interface cable called the HEX-CAN, will i need this instead?

The interface cable is what has me in circles at the moment.. everything else I have my head around.

If you just want to mess about for a couple of hours, I'll lend you a proper cable for a a six pack of Coopers Sparkling.

That's like the oldest version of VCDS going. In fact it is VAG-COM which got dropped about 2 years ago.
