when i was getting my exhaust fitted, i asked the guy about extractors, he says your best bet is getting them from the states, there is a Vr6 owner who got his remus exhaust before me, and is getting some extractors from U.S, fairly cheap, cheaper than custom and claims are better. He told me to keep visiting his site and to see how it went.

Straightline Performance should have them in stock. I paid $250 delivered to my door. They are phat gold and looked and sounded awesome. 4 to 2 to 1 branch extractors.

Unless you are doing huge mods on your mk1 1.8 there is very little value in extractors over the standard system which is reasonably efficient to start with.A 2 inch system from down pipe back would help more.

I had a full set of custom made extractors made for 268 cams . I never installed the cams , sold them . The guy that fitted them said he gained 15hp with them . I still have the extractors if anyone wants em . Ive decided to go FI

Sorry wise one, but I dont agree. I hate those two piece early manifold. They always have broken studs and rusty holes in em. You cant tell me that a nice set of extractors dont make an improvement over the stock strangler manifold.

Anything that gets the exhaust gasses out quicker has to be good. BUT...a freeway is only as good as its entries and exits. You have to facilitate better breathing to get the most from them. So both of you are right, as long as the airflow into the head is also improved.
Also, there are extractors and "extractors". Just a set of individual pipes wil not always improve gas flow. The lengths and where they join are critical. (Disclaimer: I've never worked with VW extractors but have done so with Rover V8s and many years ago lots of Minis. )

Well I have 2.5 inch exhaust and dell's with just a filter sitting on the top so the only thing letting me down would be extractors.

Hey Loon, those extractors you got from striaghtline, are they interchangeable with all 1.8 litres 8V and 16V and how where did you source a gasket from?

$250 bucks is pretty good value!

They use the stock gasket and only fit all 8vs. 16v head is different.

I reckon thats good value. And they are bronze in colour and look sensational.

I'm speaking from other peoples experience as well as mine Loon. Its been tested on a dyno in the past and the gain is not worth the trouble unless one builds a race engine. The factory twin manifold is regarded as quite efficient and they are not strangler ? as you put it.
Just don't get fooled people I'm not wise for nothing.
And Valver is spot on, 2 inch pipe is max for this application any bigger and all goes backwards.
